Obviously this is tinged by its focus:

A rumour went around that a NZ junior was injured & advised not to play in U/21 events. Days later it was found that they had somehow been entered wrongly in the U/21s as they were too old and definitely was not injured.

On table 1 (footage available as it was streamed) there were a number of problems with time-outs:
Time-out counter wrongly counting down from 5 minutes rather than 1 minute
Time-out counter placed on wrong side
Ball not able to be found after time-out

In the Open Women's final, Morizono served and neither umpire nor assistant noticed anything wrong. Feng motioned that there was something wrong. Umpire gave a let. Feng motioned that the ball had touched Morizono's cheek on the service toss. Umpire gave point to Feng. Morizono did not protest.

William Henzell lost in the semifinals this year. Last year he lost in the quarter finals. He did beat the #1 seed in the quarter finals.

One umpire had to be taken to the doctor as they ran out of medication for their existing medical condition. They ended up in hospital and took no further part in umpiring the tournament.

Two state level umpires were assessed for their national level qualification, having already passed the exam component, and were awarded their burgundy tie signifying that they were now national umpires.

Boosting was checked for in racket control: VOC, rubber thickness & rubber flatness.

The Belgian referee was amazed at the conditions for officials (referees & umpires) and surprised that the umpires did not go on strike. The rest of us (deputy referees & umpires) just accepted it as "business as usual" for Australian table tennis.

Did they have all the proper equipment to do this? I didn't know TTA has this.

In what way was he amazed?

1) VOC testing was with mini RAE machine
2) Thickness was measured to hundredths of a millimetre using a battery operated electronic instrument where the main part of the instrument was placed at various orientations across the rubber and a small slideable post that was placed on the part of the blade near the handle that is left uncovered. One bat that had a chip or crack in that area gave peculiar readings until that was recognised.
3) Flatness (convexity or concavity) was measured by a similar battery operated electronic instrument where it rested on the rubber on 2 outer arms with a small slideable post in the middle, again placing it in various orientations on the rubber.

See this video as the instruments used were similar to these except that there was no gloss testing:

Note that there appears to be no standardised minimum friction test for pimples out.

All bats involved in semis and finals were tested with these. One table for each time slot for other matches was chosen by lot for this full testing. The rest were done by visual inspection and using net measures for thickness & overhang and the straight edge of it to see if there was daylight showing either in the middle or at the ends. Also the rubbers were checked to be on the LARC.

One player requested a voluntary check, and one player did not submit their bat 15 minutes prior to their match, so it had to be checked post match.

The Belgian referee (female) was amazed that we were catered for so badly - at the umpire's briefing on the night before it started we got a meal but absolutely nothing to drink. Water for the umpires was not provided until part way through the 1st day. The overall catering for umpires was a little bit below par, but this was at least partly due to contractual obligations put on hirers of the venue. Apparently the accommodation for both non-local umpires & the referees and the hospitality packages offered to players was not as good as in other parts of the world.

Thanks for your impressions.

Just wondering if you watched the men's finals and whether you shared Jeff Plumb's views (see article link below) that it was fixed.
