The first Veteran tournament for Victoria was held last Sunday (8th March) in Geelong.

About 133 entries. Inspite of the recent upheaval with regards to the political climate in the Geelong Table Tennis Association, thanks to Rob Katsipis and the use of the Zermelo software to run the tournament, the event went smoothly and the results were up in Ratings Central, 5 minutes after the last match was held. Very impressive.

You can see the players and their results by going to http://www.ratingscentral.com
At the home page, click on the Event tab and type in 2015 Geelong Open Veterans, in the page that comes up, click on 2015 Geelong Open Veterans.

Zermelo was invented by David Markus, an American mathematician who also plays table tennis, hence this system is specific and unique to the sport.

Naturally, a player's rating may not reflect his true playing strength, hence you will notice a lot of big losses and big wins, but hopefully as we use this system more, the values will become truer.

It's a start to a cohesive rating system in Victoria..... at last.

So how do the Division cutoffs work with the ratings now Arlene? If the minus points of the "+ or -" falls below the cutoff, does that mean you can play that division?

Right now, that is a bit of a mess.
The division cut-offs remains the same, but it is not being strictly enforced.
You see players playing in Divisions they are clearly over rated in.

It might take some time, before the ratings really reflect a players true playing strength, but the more we input match results into Ratings Central, the more reliable that picture will be.

I gave up paying attenting to ratings a year ago, as Victoria went with Sportsvault to manage the state's rating system and it just did not make any sense. It did not help that TTV never put out an explanation as to how it would work.

I'm not sure whether TTV has "sanctioned" the use of Ratings Central as there has been nothing on its website, but sometimes change does not come from the governing body, but from the masses, in this case I am grateful to the people taking the initiative to get the ratings in order.

As it stands, from what I can see...I'm eligible for div 5 LOL...or at least Div 4. Mind you, I lost huge points from one bad match at Croydon last year when I was tired and needing to go home. Then I got nothing from wins at Ballarat (doesn't look like they were entered).

I might be able to play a couple of tourney's this year perhaps. Yes glad there is someone doing TTV's job for them...so we some value for our money :P
