Hi Arlene,
Did you ever try the "double round robin" we talked about?
Next best is double elimination where first round losers go to the losers bracket and can work the way back to the top. That helps if you run into the #1 guy first round. :D
"Most of the tourneys here average about $10 per event but some are very high.

At the next tournament I'm playing in, it's a giant round robin, where the players are divided into categories of 9 players each based on rating. So, the top 9 players are grouped together, next 9, etc. You play everybody within your group, and the places are determined by your finish within that group. It's great, you get to play for about 5 hours straight, with one bye round, all of the matches are tight, and it only costs around $35.

Hey Hookshot,

I brought the idea of holding an Open Competition with this "Double Round Robin Format" that the club can host and it was struck down because in order to hold such an event the club would need to get some kind of "liability insurance".... blah, blah, blah...

Too much of a battle convincing the club that it would pay in the long run if we hold such competitions. Maybe if I ever become President I could look into it.

Dwruck, this giant round robin is making me green with envy. Maybe I should move back to the States :(

Hi Arlene,
Thats too bad. You could talk to them about an "internal" competition and include ALL levels of players. It really shakes out the pecking order. :D

Last summer, mdjenders and I helped another guy run a tournament locally and we had the best of both worlds, a small round robin where lower rated players have a chance to pull off upsets, followed by giant round robins.

Here's how it worked: The initial round was a small round robin format (you could easily do this with groups of 3 or groups of 4).

All of the winners of the round robins then went into a giant round robin together; all of the 2nd place finishers went into a giant round robin, and so on. Prizes were based on how you did within the giant round robin.

It actually worked very well and people loved the format. And it gave you plenty of matches too.

Hi dwruck,
That is basically the format Arlene and I were talking about.
We spot a good player on each table, a low ranked player and everything inbetween on each table. Play a RR.
The winners of each table go to table one in the second round, the second place guys go to table #2 second round, and so on. That way, in the second round, you play people that are close to you in skill. Round two is a RR also. With 36 players, 6 tables, (6 players/table), you will end up playing a minimum of 10 matches. That will be about 40 games, best 3 out of 5.
The other big advantage is lower ranked players get to play some of the best in the first round. While I have seen some good players that don't like playing lower ranked players, most do. The other ones forgot where they started from. :D

That was exactly our thought too. The problem that some people have with just doing the giant round robin is that, if they end up at the top and are too concerned with their ratings, that they have nowhere to go but down, in their mind. I've been both at the top and bottom, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. I just like playing, so I'm happy to be placed wherever, and look at it either as a challenge to pull off upsets, or to win all my matches.
