Okay,
I finally did it. I registered for my first Tournament.
(been playing for 7 years, and only decently for the last 4).
I only play with two other co-workers, and have only grown since reading this forum, and watching a lot of youtube videos.

So, I didn't know how or where to register, found out today, and I ended up with the last two slots.
A U 1400 and a Round Robin Open.
I wanted to try the U1800, and feel the RR Open is probably well beyond my capabilities.
But it is what it is, and I want to try to challenge better players to know what I need to do.

Anyways, I am posting here to ask for some advice from this wonderful, seasoned, and sage tournament goers for some advice. I have read before, a towel is a necessity, but what else is good to bring or do?

Gatorade? Power bar? a couple back up blades?

Would it be wise to replace my inverted rubber (had it for about 6 months)?
What should I expect? What should I avoid?
I have a bunch of other questions, and can't think of them at the moment.

Anyways, any help or advice would be VERY welcome.

Don't replace your rubbers. You are dialed into them warts and all. Keep them.

Depending on the scheduling, you may need some food. Something lite. Power bar for snacking is fine. I do water, but Gatorade is fine.

Headband if you sweat a lot. If you wear glasses bring a microfiber cloth to de-smudge the lenses.

Extra bat, definitely. What if you damage yours?

Video camera, tripod.

Phone charger.

Study your opponents when you are not playing to see their tendencies, what their strengths/weaknesses are...

Always check their bat. Make that a habit. What rubber are they playing? Pips? Tensors? Chinese?

Extra shirts...

Don't take it too seriously. I just take a drink a sandwich, a muesli bar. Spare bat not necessary, highly unlikely, worry about it then.

Just have fun....and don't cho.

- read the schedule so you know where you are supposed to be
- make sure you're familiar with the tournament format
- stretch a bit before the match. Especially between matches.
- If its cold/aircon bring a jacket so you don't rapidly lose body heat between matches, especially if you sweat a lot.
- I like to go outside every now and again especially before matches. Get a bit of air.
- Have fun.

All good advice given so far. I won't repeat anything that has already been said, other than just have fun and don't get too worked up about wins and losses. Use it as a learning experience of where you are at and what you need to work on.

The one thing I will add is to get to the venue plenty early. You don't want to feel rushed. Get there with plenty of time to check in, get familiar with the venue, look at the draw, stretch, and most importantly get a proper warm-up. If you have a friend who is going, try to coordinate the time you will both show up and meet to warm up. If not, get there early, grab a table and start warming up your serves. Typically someone who is also there on their own will ask if you want to hit, or just ask around. And when you warm up, don't just do the standard "forehand to forehand" warm-up. Also play a practice game or two, just to get into the flow of putting together points.

- If you sweat a lot - bring a towel or two.
- Bring a backup setup, preferably as close as possible to the main one.
- Find out specific ball that will be used and practice with it for a bit before the tournament.
- Try to ignore the ratings of your opponents.
- Relax. It's your first tournament - enjoy the experience.
- Make friends

Thank you everyone. I now have a list to go over to get prepared. The only thing not listed that I think I'll need is some ibuprofen. :D
I definitely will be back with a report.
I will try and take some video.

Urgent question.

The tournament director contacted me saying that since I was unranked that I could go past the round robin format into the bracket/playoff section. Is this normal? Seems like I paid my money I should be able to go as far as I physically able.

Is this a bylaw for usatt?

It is a pretty standard practice by tournament organizers - the purpose is to prevent good (but yet unranked) player from signing up for lower level events and walking away with easy prize money/trophies, while making a mockery of competition. You can advance in Open (however unlikely that is :) ) and Unranked events.

Some tournaments will let you advance, but that's not very common.

It is what it is - and only matters in the first tournament.
