Were some balls grippier than others?

Did you get the chance to try with lp's tacky and non -tacky rubbers? If so what were the results?

Some were softer which allowed more dwell on bat face and more spin. No apparent difference in ball surface nor in surface friction.

No, I play 1 side Cpen, very simple set up, no LP. I played with both Yasaka Original and Mark V, that is all.

With softer balls i find the ball does not travel as far (as the harder one ) was this your finding?

Difficult to ascertain though logically that would seem correct.

All the new plastic ball samples are now reported to give vexing "cracking" sound, because of the new material being some harder than celluloid.
Thus, we all are bound to have a sick headache every time playing the game.
No good prospect indeed.

Just seen the video too. Anyone that knows when this will be available in shops?

I know it's probably covered in the 25 pages of this thread but I have what I hope is a simple question. What are the major differences with this new poly ball compared to the current celluloid balls used? Is it simply that the poly balls are slower?

Slower, much less spin and they bounce a little more (and sound broken).

It's a bit like the new tyres I just got for my car, they have less traction, use more fuel and have much less feel for the road. Overall I made a mistake

There is much more talked about the new ball than there is actually played with it

This might give you some info:

Hey Lorre,

i've seen this and so have many others...

And I found it very interesting... but:

a) until I have played with it, I can't make any judgement about how it performs for me... what I do know that it will be different and will require some adjustment time for anyone
b) it is still in a 'developmental' stage
c) we don't know how it plays with LP's, we can only make some guesses or at most some estimations

Haggisv has played it and is a reasonably high level pips player, wasn't impressed

A review of the new ball by a defender (with video):

Yes I certainly did not like it for playing with LPs... there seems to be less spin in game (which is not what LP players like) and the ball is more bouncy making it harder to control the pace and keep the ball low.

Thanks Lorre.

It is said that the new balls could be even worse for OX-players using LPs that are less grippy (like Palio) because there is far less spin to reverse.

But... probably this has been said before, don't you think the rubber and frame manufacterers will respond to this new ball by bringing novelties into the market that better cope with (or even benefit from) the new ball's characteristics? Just as it has been done with inverted rubbers after the speed-glue ban. Another thing is that we are not used playing the new balls. Maybe our styles and strokes can be slightly adapted too.

Ok, I'm also worried a bit, but at the same time I'm confident that in the long range, things won't be so different.

Yes, they will come up with something, but what will it cost us? And how much will we have spent before we end up with the right material?

Things might not be different for our level, but the LP learning curve will (again) be steeper than before. And I don't want to experience the day that a low-leveled player smashes through my "heavily loaded backspin balls" like a knife through butter.

To be honest: I'm not too optimistic about the new ball, because it is created to slow and dumb down the game to have a larger audience. Amateurs will need to change a lot of equipment and will long for the day that there was still more spin in the game. These two effects only serve one purpose: money for the ITTF and the manufacturing companies.

Look at the recent past: ban of frictionless LP and speed glue. Effect: the price of a Tenergy or a Timeless.

It's probably been mentioned a lot here before, but what are Adham's and the ITTF's reasons for changing balls? Apart from the "worldwide ban on celluloid" ;)

Also, surely they could come up with some method of getting rid of the left over celluloid balls and, in turn, this transition phase between the two where we would be forced to alternate between two seemingly very different balls.
