The following is posted on another forum. I am interested as the ITTF refers to;
All the nations of the world banning manufacture of celluloid. I have searched and can not find anything about a world ban on celluloid.

Finally some concrete details after the ITTF expressed the desire earlier this year to phase out the use of celluloid in the production of table tennis ball.

Originally posted by Propositions to AGM BoD 2011-Results3

F - Proposed by the Executive Committee - PASSED

The ITTF Executive Committee and the Equipment Committee shall request from Ball Manufacturers to produce 40mm non-celluloid balls after the 2012 Olympic Games, in preparation for the total ban of celluloid production by national governments around the world, and the Equipment Committee shall adjust the Technical Leaflet in terms of description of the new material and tolerances.

Information regarding the material and playing characteristics is unclear, though PVC was once listed in earlier revision of the propositions that has since been removed. What is currently known is that the ball is made out of one single piece, thus eliminating the seam once and for all. Kudos to DHS and DFish for managing the feat. The new ball will also come with a slight increase in diameter between 40mm and 40.60mm as opposed to 39.50mm and 40.50mm.

22 - Proposed by the Equipment Committee - PASSED

To modify Technical Leaflet T3, The Ball (B.3 Size conformity); only
applying to balls not made of celluloid

The minimum diameter of every ball must be at least 39.50mm 40.00mm and its maximum diameter must not exceed 40.50mm 40.60mm. The sample mean average diameter, i.e. the mean of the average of the maximum and minimum diameters for each ball, must be in the range 39.60-40.40mm 40.00-40.50mm. Values below 39.25mm 39.70mm or above 40.75mm are considered in our calculations as outliers.

Did I miss something? Celluloid banned by Nations around the world? All celluloid or just celluloid table tennis balls? No more celluloid key rings, toys and things?

How did all the nations around the world come togather to decide to ban celluloid? Reading the ITTF thing, it sounds like all the nations around the world chooze to ban all things celluloid. Is celluloid dangerous? I know it burns but so do many plastics.

So, are all the nations of the world banning all celluloid use and manufacture independant of the ITTF, or are all the nations in the ITTF banning celluloid balls by agreement through ITTF direction? :^)

Well its gone past April Fools, so we'll rule that out. :lol:

Celluloid banned? Doesn't sound right. Sticky tape is celluloid for heavens sake!

I sure hope we don't get inferior TT balls that bounce differently or even sound different on the bounce if this is true. Have you heard the bounce of the 44mm ball? :headbang:

Has anyone used a non-celluloid ball to say what its like? Perhaps a thread in the general section discussing non-celluloid balls would raise the focus on it and get more response Hookshot.

I can't find anything about celluloid being a dangerous substance. I think the main issue is the high flammabilty, which is a danger in shipping.

BTW We've got a few relevant threads on this subject:

Those threads are about the balls themselves. I am wondering about celluloid being banned. Did the nations of the world ban the manufacture or use of celluloid or did the ITTF decide to ban celluloid balls?

This is what I wonder about;

" in preparation for the total ban of celluloid production by national governments around the world,"

In Wikipedia they make no mention of an impending worldwide ban.

Celluloid is highly flammable and also easily decomposes, and is no longer widely used. Its most common uses today are in table tennis balls and guitar picks.

Yeah but the market might be flooded with a lot of cheap balls in the interim period :rofl:

Here's Adham speaking about the world celluloid ban and also a demonstration of the new balls which appear to have different bounce characteristics.

I think banned was the wrong word to use as there are still many things being made from celluloid. I think celluloid might be in the process of being replaced by better materials.

It will be interesting to see the effect in a game if the ball bounces higher. Advantage for loopers? :)

That is some serious extra bounce... Looks like VOC-charged ball to me! :o

This ball will make the game a lot faster. Bye-bye LP blocking at the table as the ball will ricochet off the paddle before we can control it... Great for fast sp and mp blocking, though.

Geez...guess I'll need to start hoarding the old balls. I can put them on the shelf with my hoard of incandescent bulbs. :lol:

Not only faster, but according to Dr. Neubauer it has less spin.

The ITTF has been pushing to do this since 2003 and maybe earlier ( http://www.ittf.com/Committees/T3_40mm_ ... master.pdf ).

I guess more of the "radical changes" the ITTF is so proud of.

The reason behind the removal of celluloid balls is their extreme flammability. My prediction is that the new balls will also cause lots of fires: the LP and anti community will see the extra bounce as discriminating against their style of play, which will then lead to claims that the introduction of the new ball had nothing to do with the problems of celluloid, but was in fact a plot by Schoeler and the ITTF to kill LPs.

Of course, I could be wrong: perhaps the LP and anti community will recognise that highly flammable balls are a bad idea and will graciously accept the new balls as necessary for the continuation of the game into the future. Perhaps.
