haha no, don't you play against girls over in the broken off part of Australia's east coast?. Divisional events are mixed, it's only rating vs rating within a range so you get a few of the better female players sneaking in :)

Nice picture Foam, I recognise everyone but 2 adults and the 3 young kids.

How many attended the session? The reason I ask is because Claire from Geelong wanted to take about 4 juniors to Ballarat to attend this event, but she was told that is was "fully booked". So she went to Croydon, which is about 2 hours drive coming from Geelong! Korbel was in Croydon last Tuesday.

What struck me most was his body position in relation to his shots, his centre of gravity remains low and his backswing always starts way down. Did he demonstrate his "chiquita" return of serve off a short backspin?

Very humble, low key and pleasant fellow.

There were about 30-40 people at the session, but I wasn't aware of any limits, especially as there were plenty of spaces left to sit around the centre court.

He did demonstrate his 'banana' or 'chiquita' serve.

As I said, the very best part of the night was getting to have a hit with him.

Hope to see you at the Vets, Arlene!

That's what I thought Oskar, unless Ballarat just wants to keep it exclusive.
Ballarat is the best table tennis centre in the regional area and as such should serve as a satellite for all the other rural clubs eg. Daylesford, Trentham, Castlemaine, Bendigo, Geelong. Pity the public relations of the club is not that active.

Foam - have you made the switch to pimples on your BH? Croydon Short Summer Season started last week and will go on for 5 weeks, so it's a good start up in preparation for the Veterans circuit, looking forward to the start of it.

I think Reb is ahead of me 2 1/2 - 1. The 1/2 is the doubles match :)

There were players from other clubs there. I'm sure I heard someone mention Warrnambool and Bendigo players being present. I think it's a shame that a club like Ballarat has the image of being exclusive. I'm sure you'd attest to the fact that it's a friendly club and very welcoming of new members and visitors - at least that's my experience. I think communications can certainly be improved within the club. I mean, I didn't hear about the Korbel visit until my brother (treasurer of the club) emailed me about it.

Arlene I have made the switch, I don't have any inverted rubber on the backhand of any blade now. I'm going to play a short season locally before I hit the vets tours. I've been suffering with my health for most of my life but a few months ago my doctors finally gave me an immune systems test and it was wrong, VERY wrong :swear: so I've been so busy with that, I haven't been playing at all so I'm still not sure which kind of pimples I'll use :). I'm seeing a specialist in Melbourne this week and after that I'll start to think about table tennis. In any case I am feeling well enough to play right now but I need to concentrate on my health first and it's costing me a lot of cash so I'm not playing Dandenong because of that but I will play Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo (and one at MSAC).

And I agree Ballarat is the best stadium not only in country Vic but probably Vic as a whole. Pity like you say they are a little "off the grid". Not many of them play tournaments and they don't have ratings etc so it seems a little closed. Still a great club.

When George Gardoz was alive, Ballarat was very much in the picture of things. He was very active with promoting the sport to schools, communities and would have active club challenges and would bid for events to be held in Ballarat. When he died, I asked him what he wished for table tennis and his reply was "for the sport to get recognition".

I played in Ballarat for about 5 years and I have visited a lot of clubs since then. I agree, structure wise, Ballarat is the best Table Tennis Centre in Australia, probably the Western Hemisphere for that matter. But you need good players with the right mental attitude, competitiveness and management who has a vision to promote the sports and think outside the box....

Croydon for me fits all the above criteria. It has a very good centre and the present management are doing the right thing to attract the top players to play in it's club. They get sponsorship money and use the player's pennant fee as prize money for the All Stars Division (A1) , prize money for the Premiership is $500 for each member! And the Leading player gets an additional prize money of $450!

The future of any club depends on it's junior base. You need the number, the strength and the commitment to train and play tournaments, otherwise the sport will die and the club with it.

Foam, I hope the the medical test would turn out alright. See you soon.

Croydon has some obsessive individuals running the show :). That will always make for a powerful club. The main stadium there plays well too.

The best three clubs (to play in) for me are, Ballarat, Geelong and Croydon in not particular order playing wise. Then Mornington, then Bendigo/Warrnambool/Hamilton then Dandenong. Finally MSAC. That's just based on how well I play in each one, (Haven't played Coburg sorry Carbonman :) )

Shame on you foam!

Actually, Coburg is better thought of as a great institution rather than a great stadium. It was originally designed to have 5 large courts but, in order to squeeze an extra 4 tables in, things were reorganized to accomodate 9 tables. As a result the courts are a little small (especially for me as I like to run around to the BH side and it is often to cramped to do so). Thankfully this year the floors have been treated and they are now no longer slippery.

Well Coburg from the video and pictures I've seen is easily the greatest club and atmosphere in a club I've ever seen and that counts for a lot.

Well the people (especially Bruce) and culture are what make it what it is. Obviously Dandy is the strongest club though (derrr).

That's right, and don't you EVER forget it :P

Actually Korbel said to several people that Victoria's clubs in general (facilitiy-wise) are as good as the top 10% of clubs in Germany where there are thousands of clubs. Clubs like Croydon (and I guess Ballarat, but he hadn't been there by this) he said were more like the top 1% of German clubs. Dandy has some facility problems that hold it back, but it has management problems that over-shadow that by a long, long way. If it had Croydon or Coburg's management, it would truly be the greatest club in Australia...and one where even Carbonman would be happy to play at I'm sure. Until then, it will continue to be "Dodgy Dandy". ;(

Right on! Both Korbel and Lang said that Australian table tennis clubs/stadiums were some of the best in the world. Yes, in the world. Germany has about 10,500 clubs, but most (99%) are the equivalent of school gymnasiums, where the space is shared with other sports and activities. They did say that about 10 of those clubs had similar facilities to Australia. That's 10 out of 10,500!

When they saw the facilities at Ballarat they were gob-smacked. I'm sure I saw both men turn green with envy and I'm sure they were thinking that facilities like Ballarat's were wasted on us country bumpkins.

I reckon if someone did a 'quick' run around of clubs around the world they'd probably rank Ballarat's facilities in the top 10 in all the world. Just a guess, but they're pretty good. Right, haggisv?
