Hi all! I am new to the forum and pretty new to table tennis, and would love to learn from you guys ;)

Anyway, I have always played cpen with a traditional one-sided cpen bat. I saw a cheap jpen pre-assmbled bat on a website and bought it on a whim. Two things I was hoping you guys could clear up for me:

1) Is there any reason a cpen grip can't be used with a jpen blade? or are there any disadvatanges of doing so?

2) Can someone clear up the difference between the cpen and jpen grip exactly? I thought the cpen grip used the back fingers curled and the jpen used straight fingers, but I have been shown pictures and seen players doing otherwise. I am getting very confused....

Cheers!

1. I think Cpen grip can be used on a JPen blade. I have seen CPen players doing that, e.g. on a Senkoh-5 blade which is JPen. However, you can get a very good CPen set up at a low price. JPen blades (not pre-assembled) are generally more expensive. CPen grip on a CPen blade is more suitable for close to the table play.

2. Here is a video on different grips by Ai Furuhara:

Note that her index finger wraps around the handle a bit more than most CPen players.
You can also look into the thread under "RPB grip with BH" in this forum. The video posted by ppong78 is quite good.

Thanks for the video, it helped. It looked like her back fingers were pretty similar on both the cpen and jpen. I was told that the back fingers on a jpen were supposed to be straight, fanned out, and not touching one another. I guess that was pretty incorrect :D

Hmm, let me elaborate a bit on why I bought the jpen in the first place. I started with cpen (traditional close to table play with one sided bat and push/block backhands) and then played shakehand (mid-distance looping). I bought the jpen blade hoping it would give me the best of both worlds without having to make any major grip/game changes. Makes sense, right? Well it did at the time

I use the same grip for J-Pen and C-pen.
Ai Fukuhara is basically a shakehander, isn't she ?
