I find that my index finger hurts from using the penhold grip from extended play...

I tried holding it with all 4 fingers covering the whole back side of the paddle with the thumb in front, with the handle resting between my thumb and index... none of the fingers are in contact with the actual handle...

Is this a valid hold? the style seems similar to the penhold grip...and feels more comfortable....

there is absolutely no backhand...but i don't use backhand on penhold anyways

A lot of people have unique grips. Sounds like you might have a new one. Why not post an image?

I don't think you can get a firm grip with the grip you described, because all your fingers will be on rubbers, and when you sweat...

This is exactly how quite a few of the players at my mosque hold their paddles. Their backhands look almost painful to execute when the entire arm is twisted around to get to the ball, but that's just how they hold it.

Welcome to the forum, flaygrant.
If it is the index finger hurting, you can try to sand the blade where it rubs the finger. Sand it, then try playing, if still not enough, sand a bit more. Do it gradually until you are comfortable. How much to take off is personal. I only need to sand a little bit and one can hardly see it. Other players take a lot off.
If you have 4 fingers at the back, you can only chop (and you can chop very with this grip, see Zhang Xielin) . You need that index finger to turn the blade if you do a traditional backhand. Even if you stick with a reverse back hand, 4 fingers at the back take up too much space.

well with this grip theres absolutely no backhand.... because my 4 fingers at the back are spread out...

its almost like a fusion of shakehand and penhold together (grip style)

i find i have really good forehand with this grip tho

flaygrant, welcome to the forum. I assume you are using Chinese penhold? I too find my grip with the Chinese penhold makes my fingers grow tired after a bit of play. Also with the current way you are holding your penhold, you won't have a traditional backhand block. That means you would have to move really fast to the backhand side in order to use your forehand stroke each time your opponent hit to your backhand. Also how do you return fast heavy side topspin serves to your backhand?

I suggest you try Japanese penhold. At least with the cork handle, you can easily hold your blade and your forefinger won't feel tired as it just hook on the cork handle. The Japanese penhold will also give you very powerful forehand with very good backhand block as well.

I find that using the jpen, its harder for me to control the ball... when i use the normal penhold for me with 3 fingers supporting the blade, I feel like I have more control of the paddle

also, im noob at backhand jpen... doesn't seem to work for me

I've started on a preassembled C-pen paddle with the bottom edge of the rubber stopping about half an inch away from the starting edge of the handle. This caused my index finger to constantly have painful pressure from the wood (maybe because I was holding it wrong or something).

About a year of dealing with that nagging pain, I finally got my first set of blade and rubbers to put together myself, and I made sure that the rubber came all the way down to the starting edge of the handle. This was MUCH more comfortable, as now my index finger rested on the padding of the rubber.

Try that out.

sand the edges where you fingers sit on also sand down a little off the handle, the part which rests between index and thumb i find this to relieve more pressure of the BH side fingers and it decreases the angle at which your fingers are spread, if you sand the handle too much if will loose some of the feel and firmness
