Did you guys know that Ma Lin used to have a serve that was utilizing the reverse side of the bat?? :o
I did not, until I saw this video:

Check it out at 5:12, after the point a slowmotion replay is shown, which leaves no one guessing what side of the bat he used.
Before that slowmotion replay I was just thinking: "what a great reverse side spin he has on some of the serves."
Only after that replay I noticed that he had been using his reverse side rubber and that he had used that serve earlier in the match.
The serve basically is a down the line reverse side spin serve. And it actually looks quite effective.
But WOW, seriously, I'm not even considering(or maybe I am) to try to learn that serve, it is very difficult, and I certainly couldn't make it as good
as his, so my other serves would be more effective anyways.

looks like a regular serve but he has a tendency to 'twiddle'. But as if he needs another weapon.

That is certainly not twiddling, just look at his fingers. Are you blind?

Never noticed that before and I've watched a lot of Ma Lin. Seemed to throw the guy off since he overshot the return, nice.

This guy has some nice serves as well. Looked like he switched to Shakehand grip towards the end (or a form of it, I release bottom 3 fingers while serving and grab handle after serve).

What an awesome match, definitely worth watching completely. Especially the point at 5:57 is awesome.

That is a nice point. I also really like the ones at 5:59 and 6:55. The first one is when Ma Lin catches the edge of the table to win the point. The second is where the other guy makes Ma lin almost dive hard to his right, then wins the point by catching the other side of the table while Ma is just getting back on his feet good. Truly there are a lot of good points here, great play  .

Who is the other guy, I don't recognize him. He's probably well known, but I've only been watching the pros play for maybe 8 months. I always enjoy watching them and try to learn as much as I can :) .

Well that's just a mediocre 'fast' ball, hardly any spin on it, a fairly low level serve to be honest. I wouldn't compare that to Ma Lin. :)

Ma lin was playing a match. the last video was instructional. wonder if he was serving slower for demonstration purposes. But you are correct....not much can compare to Ma Lin. He has a most exciting devasting game.

I am going to eat my previous words. That serve is actually quite easy to do, and I will be experimenting with it more.
Just wondering why the pros abandoned the serve?

I don't think they abandoned the serve. Pros are just so quick they don't make serve return mistakes. I make a ton a serve return mistakes especially when I'm playing someone for the first time. When watching the pros on youtube I don't see them making return mistakes and they serves they are returning have a lot of spin, placement and deception.
