Hi,

I am learning penhold push technique to receive spin serves.

I understand push is like
1.open the racket face, parallel to table surface.
2. take elbow behind body
3. move elbow forward ahead of body, sliding the racket under the all

Is my understanding correct?
Shall I slide under the ball off the bounce or during rising?

Appreciate your help

I think you get more spin if you do it off the bounce.

you can technically do both. Off the bounce will be very affective because if you can use the same timing to flip the ball (from a similar position) it will be very difficult for your opponent to predict.

Also assuming you are pushing against spinney underspin you should take the sidespin into account. If your opponent touches the left and under side from your perspective of view you should also touch the left under side to make returning the ball easier, and it will also make it easier for you to aim where your push will go.

You also have the option of how much friction you apply. Adding to heavy spin is difficult for the beginner (and lots of intermediate players). Also you can lightly touch the ball upward and it will take a little spin off depending on your contact.

I guess my point is yes you are learning the right technique, but it's just the basic theoretical technique. Great pushing is practiced, and the more technical knowledge, and better you get at it the more you realize how much further you can take it and where your deficiencies are...I think to myself...Man I'm glad I just do this for fun:)

PS. I'm a shakehand player and I find that the good penhold players in my club have great short games and can manipulate the paddle in different ways. Also if you like to attack penholders tend to be great a flipping the ball.

penhold pushing is a weapon to be reckoned with, like tabesamis said with penhold it can be easy to manipulate the ball to your advantage. for me its far easier with penhold than shakehand
