Who in your opinion had/has the best traditional penhold backhand??

you can make a distinction of whether you mean close to the table, away from the table, or just an all around killer with the tradtional backhand.

Kim Taek Soo, Chiang Peng Lung, and Zhuang Zedong all have beautiful backhand in their eras.

i always think Kim Taek Soo for all around, or Jiang Jialiang for sp. Maybe He Zhi Wen I love him.

koreans will say Kim Wan a lot of times. Kim Wan is virtually unknown to the rest of the world. he was captain of the korean mens team during the 88 olympics. He has one a few big titles but i have found no footage floating around.

It's strange you would expect koreans to say Kim Taek Soo or Ryu Seung Min. But they always say Kim Wan and that it was literally the best backhand and his main weapon, very unusual for a single sided jpen.

but until proven otherwise, Jiang Jialiang/He Zhi Wen and Kim Taek Soo take it for me.

Easy. Ryu and ma. Both Olympic champions in modern era. But they backed it up with killer footwork and deadly forehands which made their blocking style cpen backhand appear not so weak.

I agree Ma and Rhu. killer footwork to cover a traditional backhand. when the chinese switched to rpb penholds lost their ability to block well. Ma Lin also has that side spin backhand block. I wonder if anybody has a comment about the change in ball size as it related to needing to develop a rpb. I used to block better when we had the smaller ball.

The increase in ball size definitely has decreased the competitiveness of penhold. Penhold relies on speed and the longer the point drags on the more disadvantage for PH.
However, the Chinese (under the leadership of Coach Xu Shaofa) realized they had to develop RPB for PH to stay competitive, after they lost badly to the Swedish men's team, long before the increase in ball size.

Notice these videos are all older. Rpb are the norm on the world stage. The pen holders I saw in the Olympic had them
