Present: Can't think of any PH players at the very top. SH players have an advantage with the larger ball.

Past: Many
Men: Zhuang Zedong, Mitsuru Kohno, Jiang Jialiang, Kim Ki-Taik, Liu Guoliang.
Ladies: Zhang Li, Dai Lili, Gao Jun, Hyun Jung-Hwa.

Short pips on Chinese penhold used to be the predominant style in China, pre-1970s. There were two grad students from China at the University I was attending, forget the year, late 80s/early 90s I think - we didn't see much of the woman but she was actually better than the man. Both were second tier Chinese national team players, I don't recall their names. We took the guy to a couple tournaments, he ended up winning the Open events. The second time, he'd just bought a car and it was a bit of an adventure - he'd try to get up hills in fifth gear. He had some sheets of rubber to sell, too, just the topsheets. He said once you got a sheet of sponge you liked, you'd just change topsheets now and then.
