| Post subject: | Effects of the new ball on penhold? |
I've been looking into the change of the ball and how zhang jike and Ma long are shake hand players and the most dominant player playing more close to the table attack. Xu xin is more of a mid to back court looper ala wang Hao. I only counted 3 penholder males in the Olympics. All Asian or transplants. Can one play quick attack now with a penhold grip? Is our grip really dead? |

It's not dead. It's just way harder to learn because regardless what what you see at the pro level you have a disadvantage in the backhand. So to compete at the highest levels you either need to move like the wind (xu xin) or have a freak of nature wrist angle (Wang Hao)....simply put it's too hard to learn. Its not the ball itself, its the game that is ever evolving, and yes penhold always had that inherent problem with switching from fh to bh, so when the game evolved into carbon blades with unworldly spin and speed, to be on top of the world like xu xin take serious pair of balls to master the craft of penhold. |

Changes in TT in recent years have put the penhold style at a disadvantage, especially at the pro or higher level of play. The change most detrimental to PH was probably the switch from the 38 mm ball to the bigger ball. |
