Are any of the cheap J-pen blades out there, e.g. Yinhe 985, Palio 8603, good to experiment J-pen with? These are 5 and 7-ply respectively, while I know most of the more expensive top-tier J-pens are single-ply hinoki wood or 3-ply max, but would they work to give a good idea? Assuming I would on some cheap Chinese training rubber (likely a tacky, softer rubber)?

It's more about the grip than the bat.

Thanks. Just ordered a Yinhe 985 (15 f***ing dollars, holy, with free shipping as well) which I will put a used sheet of my Kokutaku training rubbers on.
