A bit curious to play around with a mid-end, single sided J-Pen and keep it around as a second / novelty bat, without aspirations to convert [although the style might greatly work for me (run around, forehand dominant) if I magically somehow took to the grip and figured out looping technique].

Is Darker Speed 90 pretty much the default choice? What category is that, OFF? OFF-? +?

I'd want inverted, probably 1.8mm, 2.0 absolute highest, but no idea what I'd want here as I'm not used to FH inverted nor would I be with the style. Do the usual recommendations like Sriver apply here too with the 1-ply j-pen or what would I want for an offensive rubber that has gears, mid range play, but forgiving enough?

Start with slower blade. More on the control side since the J-Pen grip trades the backhand for pure power. It's really easy to hit those balls with speed without much effort compared to the other grip.

The spd90 is pretty much darker's top end jpen.

If you're dead set on a darker, you won't find anything cheap. They've got speed 15,25,30 etc through to speed 90 blades, but they're all about the same price.

If you want a cheap 1 ply jpen, have a look at nittaku's airuline and russelfor jpens.

Also, Most 1 ply jpens are actually Off range compared to, say, a primorac carbon. To get an Off+ jpen they need to be very thick 11.5mm, whatever. And these cost craploads.
