I'm switching back to shakehand, so bye RPB, I'll miss you. :(

Penhold is really great for forehand and RPB attacks. But dang! I just can't block with penhold! And when I switch to shakehand, blocking is still instinctive to me, even after playing penhold for almost a year.

wow... so you gonna bury your cpens and jpens soon...
it's a pity

I don't have a cpen. I have 3 jpens - one a hinoki square jpen, another a square jpen that I cut down to try for rpb, and then the violin-rh.

it's a pity... but just RPB and forehand drives/loops doesn't make for a complete game. with shakehand the blocking is really instinctive (likely because i've been playing shakehand all my life before last year) and the chopping on the backhand is really much better than penhold too. And actually the service is also better (easier) with shakehand (i can do pendulum forehand/backhand and tomahawk).

one thing i learned for myself is that -- the no-crossover selling point for penhold is overhyped. even without RPB (such as single-side Jpen), you still need to decide between forehand style grip or backhand style grip when receiving in front of your elbow. Probably for the traditional cpen style (close to table blocking and hitting, ala He Zhi Wen) the crossover is not a problem. but for the looping penhold styles with big backswings, you can still get jammed if the ball is hit to your body. Not that penhold is worse than shakehand; but it is not better with respect to the crossover issue.

but... i digress :)

going back to the topic, any cpen should be ok for RPB. Square Jpens should also be ok for RPB if the RPB side is used for hitting (with short pips or inverted). For looping strokes, it can be done with square jpen rpb but you are basically handicapping yourself. just my 2 cents. :)

addoydude,

In your case, it's better for you switch to shakehand because you're used to it. Training since young is important and once a person get fixed to a style, it's quite hard to adjust to another. Of course it varies from person to person.

If Wang Hao were to play traditional penhold push/blocks or play a shakehand style, his movements would be very awkard. He is trained in RPB since young and it would be hard for him to change.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see if someone with RPB style of play using a jpen or a cpen with greater than 6mm thickness could make it to the world top 50.

I think your 6mm limit is rubbish. Clippers are thicker than 6mm. That thing Li Ching uses is >6mm.

Thanks for your info, Silver.
Do you have additional info (eg. exact thickness, model, weight etc) so that I could compile the list.

You can RPB with pretty much anything.

I've said this before elsewhere, but I really don't think that jpen RPBing is anywhere near as effective as cpen rpbing.

Yea, Jpen, the angle is just so much more suited to blocking...and the transition from forehand to blocking is also easier...

This makes the cpen angle easier to do RPB.
