I just looked at the award ceremony, TTTTT. I don't see anything special (except the name switch  ).

The semifinal between Kim and Seok was fixed, too (in favor of the defender).

You don't think Kim can beat Seok?

Of course she can. "Fixed" doesn't mean that in normal conditions Kim would have lost, but that Seok would have tried harder, and that the outcome wouldn't have been determined in advance. They clearly had agreed to have Seok win one game, and to aim for short rallies so that Kim wouldn't be too exhausted for the final. In the last games Seok just ripped every ball and smiled all the way through.

I don't have a problem with these intra-squad agreements when something bigger is at stake (in this case, Olympic medals). It's rather different from Chinese-style "dumping" imposed from above for political reasons as in the 70s.

Well, I do have a problem with those agreements. You still didn't answer my question, though...

Where did you ask me a question?

If you're referring to the award ceremony: don't you think it's unusual that the runner-up is holding most of the winner's check? Starting at 16:20 on itTV. (It's not that the check is so heavy that it takes two to hold it; see the women's singles ceremony, where Kim managed on her own.) It was all in good fun of course between Oh and Joo.

Yes, I see I forgot my question mark. :)

You can interpret that as something like: "This price will be shared." But does that mean the match is fixed?

I see that we share the interpretation of the scene. So why would the prize money be shared if it was a "normal" match?

Of course the whole award ceremony had been quite comical and carnivalesque with all those mistakes and confusions; otherwise Joo and Oh may have stayed more serious and kept up appearances.

It might be something typical Korean or a rule associated to the Korean association? Like cycling teams, cyclists and money prizes...

The comparison with cycling teams is a good one. Of course there you also have "fixed" outcomes and team strategy - the team manager determines who the leader is, and others are expected to support him for that race, even if they might feel stronger on a particular day. Same in Formula 1 (sometimes very controversial). Do you have a problem with those strategic arrangements?

Yes, I do, because it makes the sport a lot less exciting (that's why I don't watch a lot of cycling, although I'm a Belgian) and it makes a victory a lot less valuable for the athlete. And in Joo's case this strenghtens his career of "always finalist, never winner" again. This in effect creates the idea for lower-leveled modern defenders (and other minor styles in general) that their style is less competitive than the dominant looping style, because the best modern defender cannot win even a small tournament as the Brazil Open.

I once hope there will rise a modern defender who has a big love for his less valued style, knows that this style is less valued and consequently let this fact guide him to the number one position in the world. There's nothing as powerful as idealism in the world: that's what's history teaches us.

Awful match from Joo. His FH was never in groove. Fair result.

What did I tell you, boys and girls? He wouldn't get far... ;(

Again his forehand? I'm not surprised. ;(

Joo, look at your paddle, think of the Hungarian Open and slap yourself against the head. :swear: That was your last shot in the Olympics and this time you could have won a medal. Congratulations!!! :swear:

Very, very disappointed/disappointing!!! :( ;( :(

i feel still a good game from JSH.. retrieving shot after shot which is keep coming like tornado..
plus considering his opponent is Jang Song Man team mate, which is already have a proper drill and training partner on how to kill defender...

btw the reality is the defender is alway second class.. they was brought to the team for the attacker to train harder and harder.. so the defender will alway be around.. but not to win the medal..

therefore just salute the defender for their bravery, excitement and enjoy the game..
without the defender the table tennis will become true small version of tennis.... second class of the tennis...

with so many restriction and regulation introduce for long pimple.. ( I feel pity to see JSH like sitting duck without truly good weapon to defend.. :| )
