Wow, strange game. Never seen Hou play like that. He tried to block and attack on his backhand almost constantly and rarely resorted to chopping... thoughts??

He might be injured or he just didn't believe he could win (he might have encountered this guy several times before without having a chance of winning).

Might be injury but sometimes he just plays bad, especially on FH. He missed lots of attacks from there.

He still moved well enough. He tried to come round on his backhand to play a forehand often. You wouldn't do that if you were injured.

I wonder if it was a tactic because he thinks he can't beat that opponent with chop? I just find it strange that in the first end, which you generally use to work your opponent out, he didn't even try a defensive game. Even if he's played the guy before, it's worth a try, because he might be having a bad day or you might be having a good one...?

I think Hou suffers with arrogance a little. That game of him vs. Ovtcharov he was absolutely sensational... but against a much lower-ranked player he made an unbelievable amount of mistakes and some poor decisions.

Just so you know, that oppoenet is very capabel. Ha has a ratio in Swedens highest league with like 100 wins and 3 losses last 4 years.

No doubt about it DA... but do you think Hou (once ranked WR11) would think the same thing about a player who doesn't have a world ranking?

It's purely just a feeling but I think Hou probably considers himself "above" that kind of player. The game vs. Ovtcharov he was playing at 110% - he played intelligently and beautifully. In this game he was all over the shop.

Then again, maybe it's just a valid tactic against a penhold player - take away their strengths (spinny, powerful forehand loops and footwork) by fast-blocking into their backhand? That's OK I guess but Hou was nowhere near consistent enough at that style of play to cause his opponent any problems.

Probably because the other guy couldn't touch the ball (same as missing, even if the ball gets on the other side of the table)
