This 13 year old boy was mentioned in the 2010 Cadet Challenge thread but since he's about to take the defensive style to a whole new level, I thought he deserved a thread of his own. What separates this young defender from the rest is that he's using inverted rubbers on both sides and not long or short pimples on BH that 99,9% of all defender does. Below is some links to videos of him.

And the recent video of him from the 2010 Cadet Challenge (there's also two more matches in the itTV Juniors section):

In the first two matches I'm 100% sure he's using double inverted cause he attacks a number of times with his BH using strokes that clearly shows that he's using inverted. In the match against Mutti however, I don't think he attacks even once with his BH (if I'm not mistaken) but the way he chops and the spin he produces on dead balls still suggests he's using inverted on both sides.

It will be very interesting to follow this young Japanese as he develops and faces stronger opponents, cause if he succeeds with this style and is able to control his chops when facing stronger opponents, he may just revolutionize the modern defender even more, attacking and chopping from both sides. I definitely believe this is the next step.

check the pic of bh rubber

the label is so different from the surface that its probably pips but it seems like pips should show up more clearly in that close of a picture.

I don't know what to make of that picture, it does look like pips but on the same time it doesn't. The label difference and the edges points towards pips but the playing surface points towards inverted. If you zoom in and look at the label there seems to be a difference in "height" between label and surface which also indicates pimples. Maybe it's short or medium pimples. One more option is that it's a tacky rubber since they usually have differences between label and surface but the surface is usually shinier than the label, which it isn't in that picture.

My guess would be that he was playing with inverted because he's very young and they wanted him to be able to play all kind of shots and that he now have become old enough to switch to SP or MP.

Looks like pips to me, but he has been up to 3rd in the world and he is now 8th, very impressive. His strokes on backhand look just like a long pips chop from Joo and a very confident forehand.

He's got a great forehand chop too, interesting technique, doesnt drop his whole body like Joo.

At 1:52 in the 1st vid: very spinny backhand loop (red rubber). It must be inverted.

Actually ever BH loop off the red he does is off some kind of underspin. I don't think its inverted. I'd say mid-pips most likely with his overall game...his chops, his blocks, etc. Could be long but the ball doesn't seem to have the trajectories for it. From the pic on the ittf page its definitely a pip of some kind.

I met him at Safir International 2011 and asked if I can see his blade.
He plays with Tenergy 64 2.1mm on forehand, Super Spin Pips Chop 1.0mm on backhand (short pimples)
and TSP Victas Koji Matsushita blade with a flared handle

Thanks for this very interesting info and welcome to the forum!

Did you play against him? Did you play the tournament yourself or were you a spectator?
