Wang Hao, China
Style: shakehander, chopper/early modern defender
Blade: ???
FH: Globe 999?
BH: RITC 837 1,0 mm?

The first true modern defender I saw and liked was Wang Hao who was active during the late 80's early 90's. He played in the Chinese world team and he played against Waldner, Lind, Persson, Appelgren and Karlsson many times. But I remember seeing him on TV (at this time you could actually watch TT on TV in Sweden, that is almost impossible now) a few times. I was so impressed how he suddenly changed from pure defensive style to blistering attacks. I was about 14 years old and had been practising TT for about a year and a half or so. I had never seen anything like that, I was deaply impressed. Now, years later, and after a hiatus of some 20 years, that is the style I am trying to play. And luckily, there are some videos of Wang Hao but they are very difficult to find, since there is another kind of "good" TT-player with that name...

Look at 11:10 and you will se a clip from the world champs in Gothenburg in 1993 (there is one at 3:45 but he plays really bad there). Are there any more clips???

Nice clip thanks Def-attack. I used to love watching Ma Wenge.

btw - I'm pretty sure Wang TAO used Spectol. Not sure what Wang HAO used but I would've thought LP of some sort - of course I could be wrong about this.

From the way he uses his BH it looks like some sort of LP.

I know I have seen more videos with Wang Hao from the 80's when he was younger.

Yes I remember him. I have this match on VHS tape somewhere. :?:

In the final he also played Peter Karlson and lost. Before china reached the final he won all single matches. He played with Wang Tao and Ma Wenge.

Waldner lost to Ma Wenge.

I remember the reporter saying Wang Hao was playing in the spanish competition.

Since leatherback met him in China and he ripped his lp off and gave him a thick SP, he seems even more mysterious to me :)

according to everyone that has ever played him that has talked to me....he has the most direct chops with very little arc....and defends very very close to the table....wang zhen of cananda told me once that his chops came as fast as some peoples loops...

Wang Hao is my current coach. He replaced Li Kewei at the Atlanta Table Tennis Academy. He used OX long pips when he competed. He told me they were Chinese long pips and the factory has now closed down. Wang Hao can chop with anything the guy is amazing. He really likes POGO and currently he is using TSP P-1 .5 sponge. I think he chops better with OX. I am an OX chopper and he has showed me how to get a ton of spin with OX pips. I can vary the spin with OX pips, whereas PR-1 just gives heavy under. Spin variety is where it's at. Wang Hao has a great forehand chop, and I am currently learning how to chop no spin on my forehand along with heavy spin. Wang Hao is just a fantastic player and coach.

You are soo lucky!!!
If you happen to be able to film a training session (or anything) with him I am sure a lot of players at this forum would be very grateful. Most of us never had a decent coaching for any kind of defensive game (I guess most are self taught with help from this forum, like me).

Wow! This is great news to find out a world-class chopper is available to get lessons from in Atlanta. I live in Birmingham, but it may be worth the 2+ hour drive on the weekend to get some real coaching in modern defense. I'd love to hear more about your experience with Coach Wang Hao!
