I think he might be playing hardbat or an attacking long pip, but it's certainly a style of interest to us slow pimple players. Lots of cool chicken wings. Pingpongstephen can you fill us in on what equipment he uses?

From what I can gather he uses pimples out on both sides. One is OX the other has a thin sponge. Very interesting style. Takes most balls with his backhand and mostly chops with the forehand. Anyone know this guy or what he uses?

I've met both of them. Can't remember what mick wright was using though. I can probably find out but some of the vics here might know anyway.

I think the last time I met Thomas, he was using domination. Forgot what pips on the bh.

SHFS might know what Thomas uses. He's geographically closer to him than I am.

Not sure what Mick uses either. Case De Bondt would know and I only saw him last night, but I didn't see this post until today. Can ask next Thursday if no answer by then. I think you would like seeing Case play Chris Sykes, another Vet at my club MNNB (perhaps I'll get some vid one night). They both play A1 Masters on Thursday nights. Case was using BT until recently, and GR informs me he has changed, but I can't recall what to. May have been Dtechs. His brother Fred plays A2 Masters with me, but has this season off with crook leg, changed from Dtechs to Pogo. Case won 4 Gold and 2 Silver at this NZ Championships, he tells me.

I think Greg Letts is the only Australian veteran that throws the ball up higher than 3inches, everyone I ever met just hits it from thier hand , greggy is an official umpire and he would like to fault everyone but he was belted down and told not to worry lol

Thanks for the information. Wow! Double long pips...interesting. Is the 1615 what he chops with on his forehand? Also do you know what blade he uses?

Haha, I asked Case tonight and he thought he had Dtecs ox with thin sponged Dtecs on the other side. I think I'd trust supachops knowledge on it more though

Hi guys,

Those videos are recorded by me when I also played at 2011 NZ Veterans Open. We got a bronze medal in team event while Mick won the gold. He is a very talented player. As far as I know, he collects a few bats. One of them is Tony Hold's with TSP P1R and Double Fish 1615 and now Scylla. Both BH and FH are OX.

His main weapon is the BH continuous swipe attack which makes opponent hard to return!

There are other interesting videos I recorded:

- 2008 Australian National Veterans Open. He played against Daniel Chen, who was once China and Hong Kong table tennis representative:

- 2010 NZ Vet Open, 1st Set

- 2010 NZ Vet Open, 2nd Set

Cheers

Thanks for the videos and info pingpongstephen.

I'm really fascinated by his style as double LP players (especially at a high level) are extremely rare. Inspired by your videos I've been practicing with a sheet of the 1615 with .5 sponge on the forehand against a robot. It's very consistent and I quite like it. The trade off is losing the spinny underspin serve but he seems to get away with it. What do you think about his serving game?

He replaced the 1615 with Scylla?

Hi Mynamenotbob,

It is great you are inspired by the videos recorded. I always believe that by watching how other good guys play helps improve our techniques. Patience, observation, consistency and persistence are the key to success!

Mick has a number of bats glued with different pimples. I think he mainly uses Toni Hold blade with TSP curl P1R (OX), in BH. FH maybe Double Fish/Scylla, from memory, its OX too, can't be sure! Not many players are using his BH Swipe style to attack so successfully. Someone told me he has been doing like this for years, perhaps 40 years! No wonder, it is so fluent!

Well, Keep practicing, you will be another Mick Wright clone soon!

Cheers :) :) :)

One of my opponents for many, many seasons who plays in the grade below me now used many different LP's in search of what suited him best. He gave each one a reasonable amount of time and then moved to another. Over the years I've known him, he has used Destroyer, Feint 3, Dtecs amongst others I've not kept track of. He has now been using 1615 for the last 3 months or so and has been having better success than ever with it. I think he also has 0.5 sponge behind it. It's really saying something when people compliment him on how much his game has improved at the age of 66
