Edit: I am pretty sure Ma Te is using LP now.
After testing some grippy LPs with thick sponges, I have to say that they aren't that far from some SP.

FYI, one can do everything you mentioned with SP also.

Not sure one can do that with LP:
@0:13: Two BH flat hits with the RED side (one close to the table, the other further away)
@0:22: Third ball with RED side

You are right, those look very SP-ish.

The first one, at 00:13, if he is given sufficient amount of backspin, you can make that hit with that blade angle. But it needs help and there is no way to know just how much underspin is on that ball before he hits it.

The second at :22, did you mean 3rd ball? Because Ma Te serves it, so he does not do a "service return." If you meant the 3rd ball, I agree it looks very much like SP but his opponent pushed it, and if it had a tremendos amount of underspin, he could make a shot like that.

that's why I was shocked when people were talking of Dtecs, because I saw shots like that in the past and assumed SP. That being said, Dtecs sponge is very springy and hits with force...so with enough under...and with that sponge...could totally be LP.

Yes, sorry.... I meant 3rd ball @ 0:22.
I chop with SP (Spectol) and a lot of players during tournaments think I use LP.

Spectol is slippery depending on how it's used and dead and slightly reversal balls are possible. Same for swipes on deadish balls.
I rarely attack with my SP. The surprise effect is much greater when using inverted on BH attacks.

EDIT: Ma Te uses LP with a very thick sponge (therefore making it closer to SP on some shots).

At 1:04 he has underspin to work with. But at 1:06....he drives topspin with the pips. Is that the shot you're talking about?

I know this isn't Ma Te. But at 3:49, 4:23, 4:50 and more in this game Joo attacks the ball the same way with LP. Very possible with LP.

I admit that one shot against Xu Xin where he plays the red side on his forehand is weird....but he got stuck because he switched to loop it with his backhand the previous shot.

And look at xu xin's reaction

"Did he just really do that" lol

During the game against Joo below. At 2:43 and 3:02 those are classic LP side swipes against back spin.

https://youtu.be/tF6LKHdwdGc

I understand that this shot is possible with SP...but not like that. And not all the time and the stroke doesn't look the same

He also twiddles to push and loop on the backhand and side swipe on the forehand countless times in every match I've seen with him.

Yeah, he twiddles and hit flat twice in a row with the pips on FH.
First one, he has some underspin to work with but not with the second.

Looking at other videos of him, I see a lot of floating chops.... so yeah, it's maybe LP.
Anyway, he is probably the best chopper in the world now!

Probably, although Yuto Muramatsu shows great promise; if I remember right, he's only 20 or 21 years old, and he's #21 in the world.

I actually tried this exact shot last night with SPs (during a match, whoops). It was against a fairly gentle topspin serve... and the ball just flew off my SPs, clean off the table. I would definitely have to do something differently to get this to work with SPs, 100%. That's with Spectol too, which isn't particularly sensitive to spin.

From this match, it seems like the overall quality of Ma Te's forehand is substantially lower than Joo's, and he doesn't do a 3rd or 5th ball attack as often. On the upside, he doesn't miss the table as much in the transition.

He FH chops much more than Filus or Gionis, but does the FH lob shot somewhat more than Joo or Muramatsu. He twiddles more than most.
