Our club hosted a USATT tournament this past weekend and the winner was KEWEI LI who plays with LPs on his bh. I don't have a video from our tournament, but here's some from previous tournaments. I believe he has been ranked as high as World #75 but is now much lower. Recently, he was runner-up to Canadian Eugene Wang at the 2012 Badger Open, Wisconsin, USA.

Kewei Li (in red) (USATT 2559) v Kai Zhang (USATT 2557)

Pro Tour - Polish Open (11-27-2009)
Kewei Li v Blaszczyk Lucjan

Thanks! He is very good. How old? What matrial? He needs more power and determination in his FH-attacks to take the next step I think. Very good pushes and chops from his FH though.

I just noticed, he is from Malta (right?) and he is ranked #163 in the world now, he used to be in top 100 (a year ago). He has beaten lots of good players. There must be more vid of him. Does he play in any european leauge?

I don't much about him, but I believe he is about 33 years old. Sorry I don't know what material he used. I'll ask around to see if anyone knows.

I believe he played in Italy before.

Kewei Li lives in Johns Creek, GA about 10 minutes from me, and I have been
taken lesson from him for a few months now. He uses:

Joo Se Hyuk blade
Curl Pr-1 0.6mm sponge BLK
Tenergy 05 2.1mm RED

He is an excellent coach, and since I am trying to be a modern defender
his knowledge for modern defense one can't get anywhere else in the
United States. He actually beat Joo Se Hyuk when he was a junior. He hasn't
really competed on an International level in 2 years. He lived in Italy and is friends
with Mihai Bobocică, and said 2 years ago him and Mihai were about equal in talent, but
now Mihai would win the majority of the times. I think moving to the United States has
re inspired Kewei, because he keeps going up in USATT rating and is really around a 2700.

I might be wrong but I think he's the 4th best modern defender in the world right now after
Joo Se Hyuk, CHEN Weixing, GIONIS Panagiotis, I am probably wrong, but don't know of any other
world class modern defenders.

Again, the dude moved 10 minutes from me and I take weekly lessons! Lucky me!

My set up: (Modern Defense)
Joo Se Hyuk blade
Desparado OX BLK
Tenergy 05 FX 2.1mm RED

2nd set up: (Pure chopping)
Koji Vistas Blade
TSP Curl Pr-1 0.6 BLK
TSP Triple Spin Chop 1.3mm RED

Thanks for that info Atlchopper, and welcome to the forum!
I think that perhaps Wang Xi (plays in Fulda in Germany, not on the world ranking but he would be around #25) and maybe Ruwen Filus of Germany would be better, maybe even Yuto Muramatsu. But that is not important, Kewei Li is playing a great game and you are soooo lucky to have a coach like that :envy: :) .
Interesting that he uses only 0,6mm thickness...
What about yourself? How long have you been playing? Can you tell us a little how you practise, what excercises he let's you do? Or could you perhaps film a session?

Wow you are very lucky Atlchopper!

Welcome to the forum!

It would be great if you could share some of the tips you've learned from him!

Kewei played with 0.6, then the very next week switched to 1.1-1.3.
Kewei was on the team that won the Baltimore team championships.

When Kewei trains me we start off with forehand hits, then forehand loops,
then backhand inverted hits, then backhand loops. Then we train backhand chops
and spend a little time doing forehand chops, which I rarely use in my game. I'd rather
fish a forehand than forehand chop. But the lessons are very technical Chinese based
mechanics that no other coach in my area knows about. For example, elbow positioning,
shoulder positioning, proper grip technique, impact technique, footwork, chop feel, and the
list goes on and on. If Kewei tells me about a certain technique I know it was learned in China
(Kewei was on the Chinese national team when he was a kid-roomed with Wang Hao), so
I know what he tells me is 100 percent correct. Actually it's funny, because some people at my
club try to teach me things and I just ignore them and only listen to coach Kewei.

I have played for a year now and for 9 months I was a blocker i.e. Oliver Mader and reached 1790. Now I am
a modern defense player and a true table tennis player! If any inverted player tells me that I play junk
I hand them my paddle and ask them to chop with my 1.1 sponge LP rubber and 9 times out of 10
they look horrible and never talk trash again :D

Matt

Thanks for posting (I seem to have missed this post, just read it). This sounds very interesting. I would love to get to know more about these technique corrections. Do you use multiball a lot? What kind of drills do you mostly use to involve footwork and FH chops? It would be very nice if you could film some drills and post here :)
Merry Christmas!

I am uploading a video of Kewei from the Atlanta Table Tennis Academy.
Here you will see Kewei doing the forehand chop and the backhand chop.
After much research I have decided to abandon the forehand chop because
it's a weak shot. Joo Se Hyuk is the only great forehand chopper I have
seen for current players, and even Joo Se Hyuk's forehand chop is not nearly
as good as his forehand loop. Kewei, if you watch his matches, very rarely uses
his forehand chop.

I am trying to emulate Gionis as much as possible, but my backhand chops are more
deadly...Hey Gionis why use Feint Long 2, that rubber sucks! I do use the Korbel blade,
which in my opinion is a lot better than the Joo Se Hyuk blade.

Anyway , if you were going to forehand chop this is what I learned. The forehand chop
is not actually a chop it's more of a block:

1. You want your racket at a 75 degree angle.
2. You start your racket at eye/forehead level.
3. Don't chop/slice the ball unless the incoming ball has no spin. (no spin contact under the ball)
4. What you want to do is actually push the ball down which will create the backspin.
(topspin, contact the back of the ball)
5. Make contact with the ball at hip level, and finish the stroke at knee level.
6. When pushing down the ball with a 75 degree angle you always what to
move your racket slightly forward in motion.
This is a lot of stuff to remember, and most players have a horrible forehand chop, solution: just forehand loop
which is a ton easier.

Enjoy the video.

My new and permanent set up:

Butterfly Korbel Blade
TSP PR-1 Curl 1.1-1.3 Red
Butterfly 64 Max Black

Best Chopping/Looping set up in my opinion. :D
