I noticed this player a couple of months ago and i really liked his stile, really a more modern matsushita: consistent both wings defending with twiddling and some good attack (altough this part could improve in many ways...). Some nice matches on youtube... it seems that theese days he's playing in a superb way, missing nothing and with good attacking also. Koki Niwa really seemed to have no wayout; if he plays this way you really need power to break him, for example probably Wang Liqin could crush him 4-0, but if you lack that power it's going to be really difficult to win...

Too bad ittv didn't catch the matches with Chuan and Matsudaira... they must have been epic... and the score against Li Hu? So dominant...
Now Chen Chien an is beatable for sure... the final could be more difficult but we will see... by the way he already accomplished such a feat! Coming from the qualifiers and reach the semi... he probably just beated some record or is about to...

About the equip it's Shibutani (in one of his youtibe matches you can clearly see the handle) and tgy for sure, but the pips i think it's feint soft because of the angles of the pushes, the spin on them and the speed of the chops. FIII is much slower, more spinny and with different arc. Just look at the different tecnique from ruwen filus, and ivancan... the pushes and the chops look so different... and it's not SP (since he played them before and then changed over) nor p1 (the sponge is white). But of course it's just supposition, i could be completely wrong (since i also don't know the blade...)

Here's the match against Koki Niwa, QF Japan Open:

Wonderful to see this man in action! Style indeed bit like Koji Matsushita

Congrats Shiono! Amazing. Look out Joo! Like the announcer kept saying, "where did this guy come from?"

I'm looking forward to the Shiono model coming out next year.

It's going to be a new version of the shibutani :D (wich is impossible to find now)

By the way, i woke at 4.30 this night to see the semi and i just watched the final..... what to say....it was worthwhile

He played sooo well, bringing back every boll, twiddling a lot always changing the push, dispensating heavy back and floats and attacking damn well (this was what really surprised me in comparison to his older matches). I think the key is in his legs, he's so fast, he's always in position.
But somehow it's weird... it seems that everybody missed everything... i think in the last 2 matches he really succeeded in outbalancing and make his opponents unsure with the variations, while niwa mostly suffered the lack of power in his FH... but i mean, if i didn't know he just beated both chuang and matsudaira i'd say he was just very lucky in his opponent streak (in wich, if you think about it, definitely he was IMO). I hope this feeling i had doesn't depend from his adversaries unexperience but from his great skill, but what i mean is that i would like him to play against some really strong vs def attacker to see how it goes (old korean guard, some other japaneese, some european players...). On the other hand, defenders usually struggle against their teammates (which are accustomed to play with their style), but Shiono was able to beat two of them...

I hope that we can really see him again in many other protours... i guess he earned his place in the national team!!! Talking about that: isn't it strange that he didn't compete with the japanese uniform?

Congratulations Siono Masato!!!

P.s: could someone please just kill the commentator?... hes' soo terrible and annoying...

I honestly cannot believe that he is 27 years old. I have never heard of him until today!

He played well there but it really looked his opponent had no clue at all. Why did he repeatedly lose points trying to play against heavy backspin chops with his backhand instead of coming round on to his forehand?!

Because it's easier to lift backspin with the BH than with the FH. It clearly didn't pay off, though.

I didn't even realize a defender had won the Japan Open until I opened my FB today (and I open it everyday). Who the heck is that guy and where did he come from? Played pingpong on another planet until shipped to earth to show how it is really done?
