From his stroke, I wasn't sure it was long pimples... possible short pimples?

yup I think you're right. in the last vid there was a funny pop-up on a push around 3mins, then again at 4mins mid-rally, and then straight after the 3min point he received a topspin serve and it pinged right off almost like an inverted rubber. his opponent was consistently trying to serve topspin to his backhand too, which would be an odd approach to take against LPs. finally, when his opponent pushed a chop back, masato would push with his pimples and appear to get quite a lot of backspin - afaik that would be really difficult/impossible to do with LPs.

That could also happend with a P1-r and a thick sponge. You can generate some back spin when pushing back a push with that rubber.

really? if you've chopped heavy backspin, then your opponent pushes, there'll be a ton of backspin on that push (yours and theirs). could a LP really be able to push so heavily that it puts backspin on?

It's feint long 3. Saw him at the us open in 2011. He lost in the final that year. He is an amazing player though. He plays chops from really far back. Sometimes it looks like he's picking it off the floor.

Yep, with a grippy one as P4 or Feint III or even P1-r. It is actually easier if your opponent puts back spin on the ball, then you can really dig the ball into the pips and sponge and return back spin (look how Joo returns back spin serves).

agreed.Feint 3 is the best I have seen for this even in the thinnest sponge
