Thanks Manofan & Bagsntrane, it is indeed the Defence Alpha, I didn't notice the purple stains on the handle's logo, I took it for a reflection of the light... I'll edit it.

From what I read from this blade, it's rather slow, flexy and soft (Hinoki outer plies?). And very oversized. Quite different from the common harder and/or stiffer defensive blades at top level (JSH, defII, Victas, even Defplay which has hardish Anigre outer plies). Can you give some more impressions about that blade, Bagsntrane?

I THink that defense alpha is like a bigger slower Defense II, with Willow Outer ply

Do you guys know if the BTY Defence X is the successor of Defence Alpha and if it has exactly the same characteristics?

At the German LP-site/forum, I read: The special feature of Defense X is the thin structure of wood, in which Hinoki is used as "Sperrfurnieren". I first thought they referred to outer plies but I'm not sure what sperrfurnieren means. Could Hinoki be used as medial plies?

• 5 Holzfurniere
• Dicke des Schlägerblattes: ca. 5.2mm
• Breite des Schlägerblatts 15.9cm und Länge 16.8cm
• Für klassische Abwehrspieler mit extremen Schnittvariationen
• €94.90

Actually I think she is playing with SP. I watched her play in the 1/8. Everything she does seems to me to have the mark of SP on it; and there were two close-ups of her backhand when she served which suggested something like Friendhsip 802 to me, not ling pips. If she does have LP, she must be a genius to be able to hit winners with her backhand from about 1.5 to 2 metres behind the table.

Idk, but if she does twidlit a lot theres no point using short pips on the FH to chop...

It makes sense what you're saying, Kees. She also has very horizontal movements when chopping and she stays relatively close to the table. But Manofan is right too... And there are also the pictures...

Could it be Feint Long II with thin sponge?

Here's the link to her 1/8 final against Feng:
http://cdn.laola1.tv/ittf/iframe/player ... NG_BILENKO

And her first round match against a young French girl:

And a last year's youtube match:

Horizontal strokes for chopping rather close to the table is the preferred way to use SP; e.g. watch Li Jie of the Netherlands (who uses 802 on thin sponge on her backhand). The farther away the chopping is, the more the angle of the blade is downward, as is the stroke itself; and male choppers using SP, who are forced to chop far away from the table due to greater speed and hence longer trajectory of incoming balls, will always chop diagonally downward (example Ding Song).
Twiddling to the forehand makes perfect sense, as much with SP as with LP, because SP (like LP) is less sensitive to incoming spin than inverted and so it is a safer way of dealing with the opponent's attack.
I think you should watch her attacks with her red pips-out rubber. They are fast even when she is a good pace away from the table, which is odd for LP but normal for SP, and she hits against incoming topspin, not systematically against incoming backspin (which would be the sensible strategy with LP). Furthermore, the opponent is always able to return those hits (if she gets at them) even by blocking; if they came from LP, balls would be blocked often into the net due to the (mild) reversal on fast shots.

My guess is that this novel approach to female defense has been thought up by people who have among other things taken into account the change of balls in 2014, which because of the slickness of the ball will render LP much less usefull for chopping (it will be harder to add and take away spin), and which because of the size of the balls will slow down the speed and shorten the trajectory, which will have an impact on defence away from the table. Mid-distance defence using SP (which is better at adding spin anyway) will likely be much more effective though, especially if the SP is used for frequent counter-attack, first because the defender will be able to contact the ball at a distance to the table where it makes the most sense, and second because the new ball is believed to bounce higher and so will offer opportunities for hitters.
Defenders need years of hard work before they reach a high-performance level, so long-term planning is quite normal with trainers/coaches who know what they are doing; and there are still a lot of those around in Eastern Europe, where defence has a strong tradition.

I just watched her match against Li Xiaoxia... I agree she most likely used short pips with thin sponge (a very slow rubber) instead of long pips.
