I just found out about this young fellow who is playing at World Junior Championships in Rabat right now.
He won his group and will be playing another swede (Viktor Görman) in the first round. Here is his match against Sweden's Henrik Johansson:

Here is an article från ITTF:
http://www.ittf.com/_front_page/ittf_fu ... ID=116178&

He plays a little like Kang Dongsoo. He is ranked at position 381 today, he is about 18 years old.

Does enyone know anything more about this fellow?

Not quite that bad though, he didn't miss chop after chop after chop!

Then again for some reason the clip only really showed the points that Yan An won!

He just can't handle that level of speed and spin consistently yet. At moments I'd swear I was watching a young Joo Se Hyuk.

It takes time to be a good defender. Gionis has probably never been better and he is 32 (correct?). Joo was probably at his best just before his illnes prevented him. I think Ruwen Filus is getting better every year. Pattantyus is not very young either and he also peaked late, as will Shiono do (he hasn't peaked yet I think). The list is long (I turned 40 a few months ago and I have never been better :-) ). So young Kang will surely be better later, the same with Muramatsu, Kang Dongsoo and the others. And they will develop together with the modern attackers line Yan An.

Good to know I still have a lot of future before me... I just turned 27. But it's true: the hardest defenders I know are older guys. They can make the life a living hell for young attackers.

Hehe me too. Actually though it's true, the best defenders in my league(s) are older folk. That might be a fashion thing, or it might be a reflection of the time it takes to learn the art. I'm a complete beginner in the art... but I'm patient, so it's all good. I remember well the awesome article by Kees, in which he states:

Quote:
After three years of ardent practice an attacker will be more or less completely skilled, but at that point the defender's education will have just begun. Defence, be it classic or modern, is the high-school of table tennis and if you wish to attend its classes you should be aware that you will have to do so for a considerable time and spend a lot of effort.

I've been playing seriously for about a year - slightly more. I've only really settled into a committed defensive style in the last two months or so. I'm expecting a long probation!
