Pipsy, thank you for all of your posts like this one.
Do you have a single favorite from among them, especially from among the females?

You're welcome, I enjoy doing it :-)

I don't really have one favourite, but I enjoy watching Seo Hyowon and Ri Myong Sun a lot. The Ukrainian girls have their own style: twiddling, closer to the table, different strokes... Very different from the top male players.

More alike to amateur male players?

I didn't mean to undervalue this 'Eastern European' style, Kees. I just notice that this style doesn't occur in men's top 200. And there are quite some Ukrainian and Russian defenders in women's top 200. I don't think that this style occurs more at male amateur level, at least I don't see it.

No, in Western Europe defending seems to be even rarer at amateur level than at pro level. May have something to do with the level of technique involved.
As for the Eastern-European style of defending (I am pretty fond it myself; I especially liked the style of Irina Kotikhina), playing closer to the table may be a consequence of using thinner forehand inverted rubbers. In Asia, nearly all female defenders use max thick inverted, in order to have good attack possibilities. Some of the female pros in Europe have increased the thickness of their inverted rubbers, maybe to compensate for the glue ban, but in Eastern Europe it seems many of them still use the classic combinations with thin (1.5 - 1.7 mm) and rather slow inverted rubbers that make it easier to deal with incoming speed (and spin).

Good footage, interesting match, thanks Pipsy!
I think Gaponova wins because she is systematically looking for opportunities to attack, which pays off even though she makes many mistakes executing the actual attack strokes (her opponent makes more).
I wonder what thickness her forehand rubber is. When she hits, the ball seems slower than when her opponent hits it, but that is hard to judge...

I think her style (like Bilenko) could be called "twiddler". It is unbelievable how often she twiddles her blade, both at FH-side as at BH-side. Here are some older pictures from 2011, so not necassarilly what she's playing now. At that time, she was using a Defplay instead of JSH. BH is clearly FLII, FH: ... ?

Forehand? They all used Butterfly Tackiness Chop in Eastern Europe, albeit in different thicknesses. But Tackiness C is old hat nowadays, so I would think they now use Tenergy, with the softest and slowest sponge, and in dfferent thicknesses again.

Wow, she did great at WTTC 215 beating Lee-I-Chen and got mentioned on the ITTF-site as one of the biggest upsets of the day. She will face the best female chopper Wu Yang in R32...

Quote:
[...] Lee I-Chen found the defensive skills of Ukraine’s Ganna Gaponova mesmerizing.

She was beaten in five games (11-9, 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8).

Major Surprise
It was the biggest surprise as matters commenced in the second round of the Women’s Singles event; currently 29 year old Ganna Gaponova stands at no.100 on the Women’s World Rankings, 27 year old Lee I-Chen is at no.53.

Different Style
“I thought I had a chance before the match started; my defensive play is a little different and sometimes players from Chinese Taipei have a problem when playing me”, explained Ganna Gaponova. “Most important was that I kept my focus and chose the right time to attack.”

Playing patiently, Ganna Gaponova chose the right time.

“Game by game I became more confident; I tried to return service by imparting as much backspin on the ball as possible”, added Ganna Gaponova. “Often for me the return service is a problem; today it was not easy.”

The black rubber in Pipsy's post (four posts above) is Tackiness Chop I. It isn't II based on the location of the smaller "T". (T.Drive is not impossible but I guess it must be C.) Also, see that messy, gummy looking topsheet? (Mine looks like that.) The black rubber in the more recent photo above still looks like that.

WOW! Another thin inverted player!

Slow thin inverted on a JSH no less? I just put this blade together! (Except with reflectoid and p-1r)
