@garbol - are you saying CF3 can't produce lots of backspin or is it because it's OX? If it's the latter - as an anecdotal data point, yesterday I got to play 2300 attacker who is very loop-happy, so I got to try chopping them back. My Dornenglanz OX on Defplay was quite nasty - he put a lot of them into the net (and I'm a lowly 1800 on a good day 8) ). 'leatherback' probably can tell us more about Sun Jianfei OX chops too.

@leatherback - what would you say Jian's serve receive strength is? Want to know what to watch for in his videos.

no no im not saying chopping OX dont produce heavy backspin... i played for long time with OX and i know it can be heavy (ex.: dornanglanz, palio, p1r, superwall etc)
but i played with CF3 OX and most of my chops were with little backspin (still CF3 is good in close to the table)

I think if you watch the video you see when he chops he does get a lot of backspin against certain shots, but it varies depending what kind of shots he is returning. And sometimes he doesnt do full chop also.

At that level it doesn't matter how much back spin you have (he has tons PS) It just matters if the next one gets on the table...a 2500+ power loop is very difficult to control with ox chopping. Period. It can be done but it's hard hence the vast majority using sponge.

@pgpg

Any thing long he loops hard so hit opponents serve short and then he side swipes it aggressively to get a weak return and then attempts to forehand loop this weaker return.

The people that beat him tend to be able to control this side swipe and not allow him to step around and use his forehand Therefore he must chop and then they pin him.

At the US Open he was using butterfly defense 4 (might have been 3). I didn't check his pips. Didn't know there was such controversy about it on this thread haha.

Ah, yes - the one against Wei Wang, eventual champion. Interesting fact - Wei Wang was coaching Jian Li (at least in the last couple of games) against N.Tio, even though he knew winner would play him in the next round.

Also, Jian was coaching Wei Wang in the final :) - I guess they must be good friends.

The thing is that 'leatherback' actually saw his paddle in person, so it's a bit hard to argue against that simply by observations about ball trajectory.
