Hey guys I'm Tom.

I'm a 19 year old University student from Sheffield in northern England where I study Mechanical Engineering.

Although I currently do not play in a club (I am looking to change that in the near future) I am a member of the university table tennis squad and should be playing for the university team starting around October!

I suppose in terms of playing level and style I would describe myself as a bit of a newbie as I have only played the sport regularly for approaching 3 years (The first two years as an outdoor basement player :P ). Luckily in the last year I have received a little coaching and have been labelled as the 'most improved player' by the other members of the squad :)
Style-wise is where this introduction comes a little unstuck. I play a predominantly topspin game using my H3 equipped slazenger blade (which I will be making a thread about sometime), however I also like to punch and block and even chop on occasion, thus I would have to describe myself as a jack of all trades (and of course master of none  )

Outside of the wonderful world of tt my life is dominated by my hobbies, which consist of playing the guitar, classic cars (especially the ford model t), computer games, cycling and watching comedy on TV. <---an awful lot of 'c's there

Been reading this forum for around 6 months, joined a while ago but hadn't got around to introducing myself until now, I look forward to lengthy discussions on EJing. This is a slippery slope which I fear I am already on the precipice of, having only my wallet to hold me back :P

Hi, my name is Ben and I'm a 15 year old student from Perth, Australia. ( Am I old enough to be on this forum?) :^)

Well....where did it all begin? It all started when I moved houses, and there was this large community hall near my new house where old/retired people would come and play table tennis/badminton. Being Chinese, my dad was a good table tennis player but he is not that active anymore. I never knew he could play tt until we came to the community hall!
During the holidays which is every 3 months, I would come and play at the hall for fun, because I had nothing better to do. I gradually started to get better without any coaching but from just developing my own style. I've been playing tt ever since and it's my favourite sport, mainly because it's the only sport I can play and Im good at :D
My style is....well...offensive as well as defensive. I'm a two-winged looper at close and mid-distance and I start chopping on both fh and bh when I get pushed 3-5 meters back from the table. My standout stroke is my backhand loop which is just as powerful as my fh loop (Like Kreanga!!) I'm primarily a shakehand player but I can also play Chinese penhold style (I don't play Cpen that much because it hurts my fingers)
I'm currently not in any club but my school recently bought a few tt tables, and they're pretty crappy to be honest. So nowadays I spend my lunchtimes in the school gymnasium playing tt.
Till now, I've used pre-made bats, but this week, I've just ordered a "quality" blade and some Chinese rubbers, so Im very excited and can't wait for them to arrive. :)

I'm currently searching for an inverted rubber that is good for both looping and chopping, doesnt have to be good at blocking cause I'm not a blocker. So if anyone has any suggestions, please tell me!

Welcome, Ben! No age restrictions that I'm aware of, so you're good :)

If you would like to play more penhold, try to shave/sand the lower edges of the bat head (the part beside the handle root, below the rubber area) to a slanted and/or rounded shape. Only a slight removal of material may be sufficient. (Perhaps experiment with your premade first.) Cover your rubbers while working, and sand the surface well.

School tables are often some outdoor variety with synthetic tabletops (4-5 mm thick plastic-like top). Can take rain and sunlight without being ruined, but generally have a bad (low and uneven) bounce. Is that what you're talking about?
For what it's worth, they are better than no table at all :)

For looping and chopping I haven't tried a lot of different rubbers. Kokutaku BLütenkirsche 868 works for me, but that's on a pretty slow blade. Others will surely have a better foundation to give some suggestions. Perhaps easier if you tell what blade you want it for.

Well, I just ordered a DHS PG7 which is rated as off+, and I'm also thinking about getting a def or all blade for defending. So I just need some suggestions about inverted rubbers that are suitable for both off and def play. I will take the Kokutaku 868 into consideration when purchasing new rubbers, thanks.

Hi all ping pong lovers

Name is Leon, 21, playing in div 3 for payneham this year. I first picked up a penhold at 8 with my dad. Never have any regular hardcore training. I didnt even play regularly until 1,2 years ago. Changed to shakehand for 6 months now. Looping is how i usually get points ( and loose points :P). A 2nd yr Uni student, studying psy.

Hope too see u in court :)

Always nice to see alot of younger players join this forum. I really would have liked to see this back years ago when I first started playing. ( no dummy"s they did not have this in the civil war) The sharing of success and failure and continuous improvement as well as joining your Table Tennis family is just...( can I say it ) NEAT. At 61 and closing in on 62, Teddy reminded me yesterday that i could not stay too late because i was an old fart and needed extra sleep...so I stayed until 9:45. SO THERE. for all you young guns and old farts like me..enjoy this forum. It is my first read of the day followed by Yahoo news.

Peace GOtta get back to work GIG
:Chop:

I will probably not post much but I'll introduce myself anyway :)
I'm from Indonesia but currently studying in Melbourne, Australia.
I first played when i was in elementary school because my older brother needs someone to practice with. We literally play for more than 2 hours a day back then. Now I'm 19 and even though I've been playing ever since, I never exactly have a coach to teach me so I'm not sure what level I am in.

I was just doing research for a uni project when I saw this forum and I thought it'll do no harm to join and look around the videos and discussions.

Welcome to the forum trisk!

Yes I hope you do decide to participate... there's a lot of table tennis around the Melbourne area, so perhaps you can share what you think of the different venues, and how they compare to their in Indonesia?

Hello,

Well as my name suggests, I play with a Japanese Penhold bat. I’d say I play J-Pen but I don’t want to get into that whole “it should be known as Korean Penhold” conundrum. But we can all agree they’re Japanese Penhold bats ( i hope). I’m 19 at the current time, and live in La Jolla (or should I say go to school here).I am trying to get my physics degree and then see where I go after that. I play for fun and have never been played for ranking or at tournaments. Therefore I don’t know how good or (most likely) bad I am. My style is mostly looping, or should I say, I’m trying to become a looper. I love to block, I love that feeling on J-pen but i’m more of an attacker and will attack any ball I can, even if it ends up costing me a point. I’ve been playing for about 2 years on and off and have recently gotten a little more serious about it. I would like to join a club where i’m likely to find fellow j-penners  but they’re all too far on bus (san diego) and expensive to join for a little ol’ college student like me. Actually i don’t know if my chances of finding another j-pen player are actually that high. I am not an RPB convert and never plan on becoming one. I have recently been trying to develop a traditional backhand and it seems like I’m finally getting somewhere with it. From the first time I picked up a bat (shakehand) i flipped it around and played penhold. Therefore i bought myself a galaxy 982 and have been happy with my low price good quality (at least to me) bat. Other hobbies I have are playing basketball and futbol. I stumbled upon this forum when I began to search if others HELD THEIR BAT LIKE ME, and instead found out I HOLD MY BAT LIKE THEM.

Hello . . .

I'm VERY new to serious table tennis, although like most I played very informally when I was young.
For the past six months or so I've been hitting with a friend who has played somewhat seriously for many years.

My friend entered us as a doubles team in a tournament sponsored by the college where we both teach about a month ago. We went out in the first round (but took the team that eventually won the tournament to deuce several times in our first game), and after that I was hooked.

I'm 63 and was a serious athlete in college and afterwards (collegiate soccer and club soccer for several decades after college and grad school). My table tennis is improving rapidly under my friend's tutelage and I see the game as both very enjoyable and a fun way to maintain and enhance my fitness.

I'm currently playing with a Killerspin 5A blade with Nitrx 4Z rubbers on both sides and would describe my emerging game as all around with offensive attacks coming from both my backhand and forehand (I played some serious tennis in the past, as well, and can see many strategic similarities).

I've wanted to experiment with a bit more speed in my bat and have a Killerspin 7P with the same rubber on order.

I found the forum while searching for equipment reviews, and I'm glad to be a new member.

Thanks!
