I just had another look at that match up top against Waldner. "Another" is selling it short, in reality I must admit it was for the umpteenth time. It was as good as ever and I smiled as usual when Wang hits that uberlovely RPB in the point at 2.45.

So, as usual I was seduced by that RPB once more, except... this time I realised it wasn't an RPB. He had twiddled to shakehand and it was a normal (well, bloody good for being "normal" actually) shakehander backhand. Have a look yourself :)

Yes, you're right. I didn't notice that. I play RPB, and was amazed by that shot. But that one could still be done by RPB, especially when Wang Hao plays it. Good catch!

Very nice style, thanks for posting these as he has one of the smoothest RPB strokes for a pips out penholder I've seen, while retaining the traditional block. I've been working on this shot recently, getting it in my repertoire as an opener then stepping around.

Did you notice that when he is playing Christian Suss, he twiddles to the inverted side when hitting high balls? Suss often misses the next lob due to the change in trajectory.

Yup, I have seen that. :) Turns out quite effective, especially in this particular shot.
If you have a close look at the Waldner video you will see him twiddling or changing grips 4-5 times during those highlights.

Wang Zeng Yi playing Vladimir Samsonov in the 2008 Champions League.

Wang is playing very well against a style that should be hard for him. A tight match with an excellent finish for those rooting for the short pips player ;)

Wang Zeng Yi playing Jean Michel Saive in the semifinal of Praha Open 2009.

Excellent ending to the last set. It shows there is room for a bit of fun even at this level :)

Playing Victor Sanchez Molinas in Champions League, Bogoria vs Gajagrande, Dec 2009
I haven't seen WZY this aggressive and fired up for a long time.
Excellent stuff apaprt from an exercise from both players on how not to win a set as the last set turned into a real marathon 24-22.

This is the same match as above. Funny how much the angle does to influence how a match feels. I commented above at how fired up Wang Zeng Yi seems compared to before, but when watching from this angle that feeling has changed back and all of a sudden it feels like a "normal" match. Still good though :)

I like this thread very much, a very deep follow up on a player is always welcome, specially if he inspired you in trying his style :D

Im currently trying SP on FH (802) and inverted rubber on BH, and playing a very similar style, of course downgraded a lot :P and Im LOVING IT!

I like his style more than Liu Guoliang´s one :O

Cheers ^^
