Wang Zeng Yi (王增羿) China/Poland
Style: penholder, shortpips, hitter
Blade: Avallo AVX P700
FH: 729 802
BH/RPB: Tibhar Nimbus (Previously Tibhar Rapid X-press)

Image

Shortpip forehand, inverted RPB backhand. He twiddles sometimes and changes grip to shakehand when in controlled attack of smashing/fishing rallies. Weird, but wonderful ;)
I like him. Very exciting style and very stylish as well. There is a beauty in his game in a way you rarely see, in my humble opinion.

Here are four matches well worth watching:

Playing Jan- Ove Waldner

Playing Wang Xi (Chinese modern defender-ish stylee chopper)

Playing Christian Suss

Playing Chuan Chih-Yuan

makes you wonder if he'd have better results if he simplified his style instead of having such a wide range of skills to master.

No, according to a Polish player he uses Friendship 802 on FH and Tibhar Rapid Express on RPB. The blade is supposed to be Avallo AVX P700.

I agree to the twiddling and changing of grips, but using inverted for RPB is probably not a disadvantage. Everything evolves and this would be a pretty natural step to take for a shortpips player who wants to complement classic shortpips play in accordance with the modern game, IMHO.

Here is another video of him from the Polish Championships against Artur Daniel.

Normal 802, as far as I found out :)

Here are four matches from the Polish League between KU AZS Politechnika Rzeszów and KS Bogoria Grodzisk Mazowiecki. Wang Zeng Yi plays for Bogoria. Nice angle and very good video quality except the last two which are so so in quality.

Playing Tomasz Lewandowski. Away game

I don't know, It's pretty damn easy to twiddle like that and it's definitely easier to smash high balls (ie, get over the ball) with a shakehand grip.

I looked around and didn't recognise that specific blade. But since Zeng Yis club is sponsored by Tibhar and he plays Tibhar on RPB, I had a look at their blades. I didn't find any exact matches, but I did find the handle and the logotype mark on two different blades however.

This type of handle matches in design:
Image

And this is definitively the same style logotype mark.
Image

The blade with the matching logotype is Tibhar Dynamic 7 Contact. That blade weighs only 75 grams which to me seems a little light for shortpips play so I suspect the blade might be a custom version especially made for Wang Zeng Yi. This is however pure speculation on my side. Most likely he still plays Avallo P700 with new Tibhar handles glued on like everybody else does when they get sponsor deals, IMHO.

I also found a recent interview in Polish in which Zeng Yi mentions that he no longer plays with Tibhar X-press on RPB. He briefly switched to Tibhar Sinus, but uses Tibhar Nimbus now. I have updated the equipment in the first post.

Wang Zeng Yi and Tang Yu - shortpip cpen versus inverted single side jpen.
Beautiful match. Very athletic, quick and powerful penholder play.
The match starts at 4.22 into the video.

Tang Yu is quite aggressive. He pushes on first service return, but after that it is all out attack on both righthand and lefthand side. He uses a lot of offensive lefthand blocks to good effect.
He also plays the first match in this compilation video. Check out his beautiful lefthand side flick at the point starting 0:39 :)

Wonderful find with Tang Yu, great match with Wang Zeng Yi.

Sad to see him lose (Wang Zeng Yi), but as I saw in the match, he tried certain lines of attack, but might have difficulty going for those given the short pips. Would most likely go in if he looped, but that wouldn't be too exciting to see, wouldn't it? ;)

Tang Yu reminds me of my friend when we were starting out to play table tennis, very much 'like' him. Traditional penhold inverted loop style; Liu Guoliang and Wang Hao were just getting into popularizing the RPB back then. Great court coverage, that inverted style.

Thanks for the vid, and thanks for some sweet memories of youth.

I just had another look at that match up top against Waldner. "Another" is selling it short, in reality I must admit it was for the umpteenth time. It was as good as ever and I smiled as usual when Wang hits that uberlovely RPB in the point at 2.45.

So, as usual I was seduced by that RPB once more, except... this time I realised it wasn't an RPB. He had twiddled to shakehand and it was a normal (well, bloody good for being "normal" actually) shakehander backhand. Have a look yourself :)
