I love watching Chtchetinine, but honestly, I don't understand how he gets away with leaving that forehand chop so high. He seems to be going too much under and around the ball to impart sidespin, and the result is an easily attackable ball that often gets slammed back. His stroke seems to me to be a good variation but odd to have as your bread-and-butter forehand chop. Sometimes it seems to me he'd do better if he just chopped on his forehand in a more slicing diagonal motion against the back of the ball instead of scooping it ... but then again, he's a world class player, and I'm not, so what do I know ...?

Seeing the calmness this "issue" was resolved I don't think he was cheating. We don't know what happens outside of the camera.

I've come to this conclusion:
If you watch many of his matches i think he does it that way intentionally to challenge the smash, and most of the time he gets the point because the sidespin is little annoying for the positioning of the attacker and makes more difficult the read of the ball and above all there's huge variation between extreme backspin and no spin. It's an all out shot
I guess you can consider it the defensive counterpart of the loopkill: a very strong ball, but if the opponent just gets the racket in the good position he blocks it to a place you can't get to

Yeah, I noticed that in playing Markus Groethe, he used a more traditional forehand chopping motion and largely kept his chops low and without much sidespin. I wonder if against world-class players, the spin they impart is so heavy that he needs to use sidespin to control it.

In the video above the FH chop at 1140 that ends the point is to me what characterizes chtch's mode of "defensive" attack. Varied FH underspin, and in this case the underspin was so great Chen couldn't even do a safe push dropshot...or "dump" as we sometimes call it. Looks elementary but I think us choppers know it's not. Attackers would see this as "just waiting for the opponent to make an error" but I see it as "forcing an error" just as a super Spinny loop forces errors.

Totally agree with you. However, most people (even TT players) just see it like an error.
