Does anyone actually knows what gear he uses?

It's odd that he never stretches out his arm to hit a ball. Qian Li is a bit like that too. Maybe it's an east euro thing?

I noticed that he twiddles a lot.

Chtchetenine is doing very well in Moscow now. He beat Gorak of Poland in straight sets. It is miraculous to watch his forehand chopping - most of the balls bounce high but are so heavy with backspin that his opponents can't lift them anyway! Must be his 1.0 mm Triple Chop. But his attacks lack power, that's the downside.

That kind of ball would give me a major headache. How many players have practiced looping/hitting that kind of ball?
Not me.

I'm amazed at the forehand chops I get away with sometimes, you think you screwed it up sending a high one that kinda drops near the end of the table but time and time again I'm relieved as they send it flying straight off the table or drill it into the net.

The only other defender at my club uses inverted both sides, he said he tried long pips but couldn't find any that gave him the amount of spin he wanted. He's old now, not as mobile so stays fairly close to the table, but backs up against better opponents. He's pretty good, used to be a lot better, was state champion a long time ago. I need to sit down with him next time I see him and look over his setup.
I'd have days I thought I was playing great offense and then play him and after warmup I just failed and failed to be able to loop his chops with any amount of consistency, not a lot of variation in them, but heavy, he still is about 1700 rated though a grandpa.
Looked him up and he uses Stiga Tube Defensive and Stiga Chop and Drive and was also formerly the editor for Table Tennis Topics...

Not the best angle since it's directly behind the table and not high enough up (but who needs a good angle when it's Chtchetinine and it's actually better if you want a closer view of his technique), but good quality none-the-less. I'm not the original uploader (pretty sure it's a live stream-rip from bwin), and this isn't available on the ITTF page and should be shared here as well :-).

He actually went on the offensive a few times this match.

Great stuff. Chtchetinine does the warm-ups about a good as me. haha. I enjoy the way he plays. By far my favorite player on the ITTF tour. Thanks for posting!

I like that angle, at least for a change. Its high enough to see both players even though they're in line.
You can really see that a lot of Chet's fh chops have a considerable left to right fade on them.

If I understand correctly, Chtchetinine will play against Fabian Åkerström today. If anyone finds a video of that match, please post it here or there (at Fabians thread).
