I just watched that last match more closely, and Gionis must have changed his equipment recently. He now plays with a red rubber om BH, he used to have a black one. Anybody knows if he just changd colour or if he changed lp?

Although I don't particularly like the camera angle of the those vids, you do get quite a different view of the ralley. It's interesting to see how slow the ball comes off the LP.

A match from Champions leauge. Like mentioned before Gionis has changed rubbers (or at least colours). Does anyone now what he is using. This change doesn't seem to affect his game very much though.

Thanks alot MNNB! Damn, Gionis plays so good! While Joo is getting more defensive Gionis seems to go the other way. He plays very aggressive. I hope he continues this path, could be very interesting to see where he ends up :-)

in my opinion....list of defenders with he strongest forehands

1. Panagiotis Gionis
2. (close second) hou yingchao
3.ruwen filus
4. (close 4th) Joo
5. way below (chen weixing)

I agree with Gionis on top (after seeing that video), but I think Wang Xi should be next, Hou misses his FH too often I think. I also think Joo's FH still is better than Filus', who has good placement but not enough power, and he sometimes chooses the wrong balls to attack. Then perhaps we should place Jang Song Man above Joo, but I haven't seen any videos of him recently. But Chen is absolutely way below, although he is very good at guiding the ball back, low and with different spin.

i forgot about wang xi.....however i would place him beneath joo....he may be consistent and choose to attack alot, however if you see some rallies where his opponent is lobbing....wang xi just cant seem to put it away......there is a match between him and Dimitrij Ovtcharov where you can see what i am talking about, and jang song man has a very good offensive lob that lands deep in the table but he also chooses to rarely go toe to toe in looping battles with offensive players, prefering to back up and chop one instead.

hou's sidespin is vicious yet inconsistent, but i am not talking about this shot, i am talking about one where he has a proper normal top spin loop.....its crazy

This is taken from Hou's interview in May 2003:

Reporter: What are the differences among the three of you (Hou, Chen and Joo)?

Hou: We all have our own specialties. Our backhand techniques are different. Joo's chops are deeper and spinnier, and they pressured the opponents. Chen is a very steady chopper and seldom makes mistakes. I have more variations in my backhand spins than they. I use a different rubber than theirs, and I can create spin with my backhand rubber. Our forehands are roughly the same style, but they are better in forehand rallies and continuous attacks than I am. But I have more power and speed on my forehand attacks.

Well it is almost 8 years ago ...

It is a part of article "Hou talks about choppers" which can be find here: http://home.covad.net/~chunglau/052903.htm

IMO Chen Weixing has better 3rd ball play than all of them.

chen does third ball attack much more then other defenders and his down the line opener is very often a winner....but his forehand still does not have the power as the rest of them
