Seemed like he was avoiding using his forehand chop as much as he usually has in the past

The match against Samsonov is quite spectacular!
After the 2nd set Joo started twiddling and attacking with his BH and FH. Something you can rarely see from him.

I think we will se a lot more of this from him. All defence does not work with so little spin to manipulate.

Look at Swedish "defende" Gustaf Ericsson (he has a thread of his own), he attacks with BH as soon as he can. I think, with plastic spinless balls, it is in this direction defenders need to develop their games. Muramatsu need to return to his BH-attacking game I think. Ma Te has rather good BH attack, and Filus as well. Gionis has a different game and he can play FH-FH more than many others I think. But he would really need to sharpen his inverted BH close to the table.

there is a guy over at myTT claiming that here JSH is playing with an inverted rubber on his BH. Supposedly he saw it in person, however, he didn't see which exact rubber he was using, just noticed the fact that it was inverted.
If you watch his black rubber closely, there is definitely some strange sheen to it... and his bh chops seem a bit inconsistent. Not sure whether this is true but perhaps someone would be able to get a close up of his BH.

Well, let's not speculate about this here :)
The black side is Pips Out 100%. You can hear it, you can see the stroke difference and you can see how he twiddles sometimes when he attacks or pushes a push from Samsonov. There's absolutely no chance he was using an inverted rubber instead of pips in this match.

I actually went back and watched it again, this time paying attention to the sound too. You are right, sounds very much like a regular LP.

In our OOAK Forum interview of Joo several years ago, Joo wrote that Samsonov and Wang Hao were his two most difficult opponents. As far I know, and I may be wrong, i think that Joo has never beaten Samsonov. So, its too bad that he came so close this time and did not win.

I'm amazed by his pushing stroke. It seems so long and having plenty of spin. I wonder how he does that.

Good to see Joo playing so well. Shibaev looked like he was about to pass out in the second game, yowsers.

Another match played. Every video with the English commentary that I've found so far has the sound out of sync with the video, but this one is sync'd correctly:

Rematch vs. Drinkhall. Quote of the game from Persson during a coaching session: "If you win this, we'll go out for Korean barbecue afterwards"
