Thanks for the videos, Sir Def-Attack!

Is it just me or Filus is out of shape and rather unmotivated?
(Edit: In the vid against Steffen Mengel)

Probably, Ruwen looks a lot younger in that match against Mengel. However, Mengel is not an easy task, he beat Wang Xi earlier this year in Bundesliga.

Thanks alot for those! Ruwen played very good    . Although Chuang isn't good against defence, he crushed Joo earlier this year (or was it last year) so he must have been training a lot against pips. But Ruwen seems to have become a lot better this year, he is very good at chopping balls that comes fast towards his body. Also he doesn't attack as wildly as before and therefore he doesn't miss as much. Did he change pips perhaps? He seems to be able to control the speed very good, and that could indicate a change to TSP P-4.

Now I will watch the next match against Crisan, who usually is very solid against defence...

I only got to the third point, when Filus did 3-0 against Crisan with a fabulous BH loop/smash from a little away from the table - with his pips!!! What a great shot! Crisan had no idea that shot was comming :D .

Edit: damn, he twiddles fast, didn't even see it

He sure is! And pretty different from Joo Se Hyuk. Perhaps his style is what needed to rule the world :)

Those matches are from Bundesliga, the second best TT-leauge I think. There will be a lot more matches comming through that channel I belive, since they seem to stream a lot more matches this season. And don't forget that Wang Xi is playing for Fulda!

Ruwen beat Swedish youngster Hampus Söderlund 4-1 in Czech Open and will now face Stefan FEGERL of Austria. Tough one! I guess Stefan train a lot with Chen Weixin, and I think he beat Joo Se Hyuk in the Olympics. On the other hand, Ruwen plays very different from Joo...

I know I'm gone sound like a pain in the *** , but can we still call Ruwen Filus a defender? What's seperates him from an allround player? At the moment his emphasis on defense, but if he wants to get better, he'll need to put a bit more emphasis on his attack and at that moment he no longer will be a defender, but an allround player.

Also, I don't know if Ruwen eventually will be a real threat for the (upcoming) Chinese. Not only is Joo's style (a young or healthy Joo then) capable of defeating the Chinese, so a style shift in modern defense is not necessary, but Ruwen's weapons are just too "mediocre" at the moment to be a menace for the Chinese. If they grow, then both attack and defense will need to grow. But if his defense needs to grow, he'll need another pip and that'll mean more defense à la Joo.

So in short: if he wants to be menace to the Chinese, both his weapons will need to grow. If he only lets his attack grow, then he no longer will be a modern defender because automatically his stronger weapon, his attack, will be put more forward in the match. If he let his defense grow, even with an equally strong growth of his attack, he'll need another pip and his style will more resemble Joo's. I suspect the latter is not his ambition, but the former. IMO he'll be an allround player then.

The end! Just had an exam... Still in that mindset! But I'm still cheering for Ruwen!

Lorre, I agree with his style not being all defensive, but more allround. But that is only semantics. About what he needs to be better at - everything. Thing is - he has grown a lot better last year. His attack are far more powerful now than a year ago. His BH chops are about the same but he has a better BH attack now (when he twiddles) and I think he make better decisions now. a year ago (or more) ha had a tendency to attack wrong balls leading to loosing points. That doesn't happen that often any more. I think he has found his way of playing and he can now concentrate on refining that.

About being a threat to the Chinese players - probably not. If they get troubles from him they will make a few copies to train against. But he did put some serious pressure on Ryu not long ago (video above). Not many defenders can do that.

I find Ruwen to be the largest source of inspiration for my own playing right now. That might be why I like his development so much :D
