Is it just me or does he look a bit chubby and a bit slow at the moment? Watched him vs Apolonia and there were a few shots which I thought he usually would've managed to get to, but didn't. He always has been slow for a defender. He's a tall guy, you know. That's why he's not a full-time defender. |

Yes, but (1) not everyone has the talent to be a defender and (2) if you see the beginning of his career he wasn't a defender, but more of an allround player with LP on his backhand. I never found his defense his strong point. The latter is crucial for a good defender. |

I agree, but I'm not really referring to his talent as player, just an observation on his current physical fitness. I've definitely seen him looking sharper and quicker than he did in the game vs Apolonia. |

He was looking a lot stronger last year but at the start of this year he looks to have quite a bit of weight around his belly, and his footwork just isn't as quick as I've seen it in the past. |

I see that in the pictures mano posted, but isn't this an optic illusion? I doubt someone playing in the highest league of the German League would gain some pounds. Maybe it's better for the plastic ball.

I've noticed it as well. He's not very lean by athletic standards in these pics/recent vids, but it's hard to tell how much that is actually impacting his performance. Most people have a range in which they will perform optimally; it's possible he's just outside his a tad, or maybe there are other things happening that are not immediately apparent (sickness, stress, poor sleep, etc.). |
