Should try and get him to keep his elbow closer to his body. Looks like he is using the same technique as an inverted rubber. It will work sometimes, and when he pulls it off it looks good, but he won't be consistent in a game situation.
He should try and generate the speed from the extension of his elbow rather than flicking his wrist. His wrist should be more bent so that the blade is at nearly 90 degrees to his arm. When hitting tell him not to rush and wait for the ball to be about 2-3 inches away from his blade before initiating the shot. (Shouldn't need to much backswing.)
If he could lower his stance he would get better control. Position is really important and he should always try and move his feet and body so that he hits the ball in front of his stomach. The bat should be close to his stomach and when he hits his arm should extend forward in a horizontal motion with his wrist held firm and his bat nearly 90 degress to the table with a slight upward motion. I have found this technique to be the most consistent in a game situation.

Once he masters this stroke he can then try brushing the ball with his wrist to create a fake top.
