Check the wide stance. That is one of the things they stress here. It helps with all strokes. :)

Hookshot

How does his technique compare to your Chinese training? My coach is Chinese and he harps on me constantly for breaking my wrist inward (like the player in the video) and "changing the plane." He says this is bad, bad, bad.

My coach says the correct technique (in the Chinese style) is the classic bent wrist in line with the forearm and that the wrist can be used as long as the plane doesn't change. He likens it to throwing a frisbee. He also emphasizes that this is very important for recovery because it keeps the wrist in the proper position necessary for the next shot, whether fh or bh.

Hmm, sounds like a familiar argument. Does your coach also emphasize some torso rotation in unison with the entire backhand topspin motion?

He teaches that the stroke starts with a shoulder turn to the left without too much rotation by the hips. For a topspin loop, the blade is almost vertical near the left knee, the arm extended (that is, very little bend at the elbow). The blade face is roughly perpendicular to where you want the shot to go (by moving the feet, not by manipulating the wrist or basic stroke). The stance is the same as the forehand...12 o'clock/2 o'clock with a very wide stance. For more power the left knee flexes and for an even harder shot you can step in with the right foot. This is a very long stroke that takes time, but on slow balls it can be a real killer.

I don't quite have the skill or confidence yet to execute the shot reliably, but my coach's theory is that it is easier to transition from the "full" shot into more compact, closer-to-the-table shots than the other way around. So most of my multiball training on the bh is this long stroke and I can tell that it has helped me even though I usually wind up with a slower, shorter stroke in actual games.

Hi Cyber,
Same from my coaches. For a hard backhand when you are too close to the table for that stroke, they have you do a shorter stroke and pull your stomach in at the same time. Hard to describe but you do get more power with a short backswing that way.
They do want everything moving on the same plane. Wrist, forarm, etc. :)

Yeah yeah, same here. I was merely wondering, and the good people who teach me occasionally are people who did train in China, so I guess that figures...

Hookshot -- pull stomach in, like bend your upper back towards the stomach?
