Recently, while caring for my mother who was in the hospital in Western, NC, I had the pleasure to visit the Asheville Table Tennis which I founded around 1985. I had not been to the club in more than 20 years so it was nice to see it still going strong. I enjoyed playing there several times and held a 45 minute impromptu serve clinic on my last visit. One of the players recorded it and it is now on youtube at:

This was not a formal clinic but just me working with some friends and covering some basic information. Perhaps others on this forum may find it useful. In 45 minutes, I was only able to cover a few of the basics.

One cannot say enough or often enough the importance of a good serve/attack and a good serve recieve. Especially important is your emphisis on a good serve recieve as an indicator of the quality or level of player. The ability, or lack of, is often the differernce of a few points, which almost always effect the outcome of a game.

Fantastic Instruction coach! I was hitting down on the ball! I'm going to try this and train regularly at it!

Thanks!

Hey friends!

I'm confused.....By looking at videos of various players, it appears that almost all hit down at the ball, and very few use the method prescribed by coach McAfee. Is it logical to work on the Ma Lin/McAfee type of serving as a variation in one's arsenal of serves, or should this type of serving be used as the meat and potatoes of a higher echelon of serving?

Your right Glen I`m definetly Guilty . Its probably because most of us are set in our ways and you`ve heard the old saying that you can`t teach an old dog new tricks . Next year is my goal to have some quality serves like this its just going take time and commitment. We really enjoyed having the master come back too the club and his coaching was invaluable :)

The most extreme backspin serve can be achieved by hitting up on the front side of the ball with a grippy/tacky inverted rubber in the serve. I have practiced this extensively, but still don't use it in a match as it is devilishly hard to get low enough and consistent enough not to be either attacked or mis-served. My underspin serves generally hit slightly on the up stroke at the bottom of the ball, as this is the most consistent way to easily impart heavy underspin and variations in striking the ball will vary the spin. Its a wonderful feeling when you serve a heavy underspin ball and see the opponent dump it in the net and then serve what appears to be the same serve that they exert a hard chop at it only to see it sail long!

Good vids Coach!

Ah haven't seen this :)
Sure is informative.

Indeed, for the ultimate backspin serve, one accelerate the ball forward with the force from the friction of the rubber's surface. Its mad :) I used it too sometimes. A high toss also helps the ball dig more to the rubber.

This video was highly informative, before I watched this, I had a very limited serving capacity, this has really helped me in terms of the amount of spin that I can generate.
