Rubber cement is same as normal table tennis glue eg stiga victory glue, its thicker than speed glue.

Hmm, I find it a lot more difficult to get an inverted sheet together -- perhaps someone can give tips?

Getting glue properly down the tips is a problem -- I wouldn't like to spread glue on a sheet or something, it feels like a waste.

What I'm currently doing is spreading a thicker layer on the sponge. While the glue is wet, I attached the topsheet carefully. Then I've put some weight (a couple of books) to let it dry in good contact, left it for several hours.

I've just cut my prototype, so I'm hoping for a good bond. :?

Anyone tried Tearmender/Copydex for this gluejob? I'm a bit worried about trying it with Copydex, because it's harder to spread out in a very thin layer in my experience. I must confess I use the brush in the Copydex bottle for gluing rubber to blade, which is really more like painting than spreading, compared to what could be done using a smaller smudging tool like those pieces of foam. I only found one chap who claimed to have done it, but a novice who did it just the once... so hard to judge based on that. I hope some of you out there have already done the test, and I don't have to waste N sponge+topsheets experimenting :)
Cheerio
