Since JKC posted his video, I have gone back to the basics with my serve (I realized I was trying to get much too complicated and was practicing the wrong kinds of serves!) And have been practicing them for a couple of weeks. As a result, I really wanted to take a video of my serves to find out what my opponents are seeing when I serve. And even more importantly, whether I am giving any particular "tells" on my different kinds of serves.

Long story short, I decided that, since I was making a video anyway, but I would put it up and let all of you pick me apart -- err, I mean, watch them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhpHIaug5Zk

Note: I was too lazy to cherry pick the best parts out and edit the video -- so this is a completely unedited video.

On looking at the video myself, I know the one thing I am going to have to continue to work on is to make sure that the serves stay as low as possible. one of the things that I have been doing along those lines, is to make the contact point as low as possible to the table. Looks like I still have a bit more room to go before they start becoming questionably legal.

Very nice setup Glueless, love the setup of a table inside the living area.

I think your timing and variation of the serve is quite good, and you action looks very similar for all serves, which is very good!

I think you just need to work on getting more spin, so that you can have wider variation of spin. Really snap the wrist at the point of contact to get more spin... you should be able to stop the backspin ones from reaching the end of the table, and the sidespin ones kicking wide to the side.

I know you're only practicing here, but it would be good to practice from a real live game stance, as you don't look ready for a return.

Very nice video though! I reckon work in this for a few weeks, then post another video... I guarantee you'll see a great improvement.

Haggisv has it,
You are treating the serve as being over at contact. When I practice serves, it includes getting into ready position after the serve. Moving your foot and body to square up to the table should be worked into the serve motion.
You have spin figured out pretty good with small changes to your stroke for top or chop. However, it will be different when you serve in a game as you will (should) be moving to get in ready position.
Like Haggisv said, more wrist. Try cocking the wrist before you come down. I use more body and shoulder motion to get more bat speed also. Throwing the upper body into it helps "pull" the leg/foot around to square up to the table.
Less serves but complete stroke and follow through to ready position is what I do.
Nice setup you have there. Good camera position for this also. :D

Good point hookshot, I don't generally practice moving into position after serving either and just expect it to happen in games. It is the same with all shots really, perform the shot and then recover and get ready for the next.

Yes so true! The better my serve, the more I expect it NOT to come back, or at least NOT to come back where I don't expect it

Not bad!
But your serves are illegal :P

Next time try mounting the camera lower. You should not only interested in the spin and length, but the bounce height. I can't really tell from your videos, but they're bouncing reasonably high.

As stated you must recover after the shot - i find that playing a 'ghost' shot after the serve [the shot you think your most likely to play] helps with this and helps link your serve with the third ball [vary your ghost shots too though]

Illegal????

So you think the right hand is covering too much of the ball at contact... I noticed this to

Looks like a good mould to start working with at least. Not too hard to turn it legal. Might be harder to get them lower and keep consistency. Once you are aiming lower, there will be more into the net. May be easier to get lower by bending your knees as the ball comes down and you go into contact.

Its fairly obvious you've got a good sense of whats requires for good service and variation - two things stand out though [apart from not recovering] -

As mentioned earlier throw the ball from a flat hand [i always start my service from a flat hand resting next to the table next to the base line as a 'starting pose' before going into the service action] - this is a good reminder to serve correctly -

Also if you look at a lot of the pro's their heads are very close to the bat/ball contact point when serving - this gives them better judgement/timing of the ball and keeps their bodies low and compace and 'sprung' for the next shot -

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj6rKqv0W ... re=related
[head apporx 1ft from the ball at contact, back is slightly arched - revovers as PART of the stroke NOT afterwards!!]

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=5_kKWeVRE ... re=related

see how close his head is to the ball at the point of contact

Overall though it looks like you have the necessary basics & i like the fast ones.

Its already been said really, its not a race to see how many you can do in a space of time, you are not giving yrself enough time to actually evaluate what you are doing, and Addressing the table is all part of the concentration process. When I practice my serves (something I've done alot of) I do 3/5 a minute. If you are trying to improve them, its hard to go faster, because you have to break up the whole of the service ritual in to segments such as ; Yr Objective, yr approach, yr stance, Yr starting position, yr throw, yr contact point, yr first bounce, yr second bounce, the pace and the spin. Once you can stop seeing the serve as a single entity, you can start working upon any of the facets above, the alternative is to join the ranks of countless others who put time in practicing their serves, but never really make any headway. Hope this is of some use to you, If I had your set up (nice pad) I'd spend hours at it :)

BTW, the clip of Ma Lin's serves above, They are clearly illegal, he moves his arm out of the way at the last moment, it should be as soon as possible.
