With all due respect Reb the title of the thread is 'What level would you estimate these guys at?'. To assess this requires one to evaluate both strengths and weaknesses. There may be many reasons why any player is at the level they are at (usually how much they practice has something to do with it! :) ) but nevertheless they are still at that level.

Just look at 95% of coach MaCfee's serves many just drop down from high and never is tossed at all and most serves are the same as the two in the video, and he teaches coaches

Yes I would agree with Hookshot about the attackers flaws but he looks to be a self taught player at mid age ,and even then he could get better technically if someone helped him, but in general many players like him/me and others are just having a fun night out and a bit of excersize and away from the TV and computer

I noticed this too (low throw serves from Coach M)

Read this again;

"We were asked how we would rate them as seen on the vid".

Well, I made a vid.
When I watched it, I realized,,,well I missed the first loop and many others because I had the end of the table with poor lighting and I am sure someone watching could not tell that.
Then I noticed,,,well, I was missing pushes but I think that was from having two beers last night,,,,but, yea, you have no way of telling that.
Then,,,my footwork was worse than normal. Must have been the lack of sleep. Well, guess I wont post this,,,,people will not have a clue about my real rating as they dont know all the extenuating circumstances. :lol:

Hookshot must have had that wicked sarcasm in him all along, he just doesn't show it all that often.

The OP asked what level would you estimate these guys at? well their level is 2nd player in a 3 person team (approximately) in the Suburbs of somewhere,
Also he commented on their serves because I l read it again, so others made general made comments on their general ability and flaws and made comment that in America those serves would not be allowed ,
In North Dakota the could be State Champions in California number 3900 on the rankings list

A blanket dismissal of the effectiveness ratings doesn't make much sense to me. In chess they have had the Elo rating sytem for many years and it is extremely accurate. For instance, it is very common for players in tournaments to roughly finish in order of rating (especially if there is more than 150 points difference between them). Moreover, when you play someone you can get a pretty good feel for what their rating is. The higher the rating the sharper and more precise the moves tend to be, the better their opening knowledge is, the stronger their endgame technique is etc. I think I could have a pretty fair idea of someone's strength up to around 2200 - higher than that I am happy to acknowledge that I am just not a good enough player to tell the difference.

I see no reason why ratings can't be just as effective in table tennis. The USTTA ratings for instance are pretty much in line with the chess ones in terms of figures. For example, super grandmasters in chess start around 2700, roughly the same mark as strong professional TT players would start to be rated. The 2000 mark in chess is sort of the cross-over point between average club player to more developed tournament player and usually requires a degree of hard work to reach. Such would also appear to be case with the USTTA system. Like in chess, I think in TT an experienced eye who knows what to look for would be able to have a fair shot at estimating someone's level.

In my country out of 1000 ranked players I'd estimate attacker to be at position 400+ and blocker at position 270+ (all serves included)
