I came across a Hungarian guy's youtube channel where he has uploaded some fantastic clips of Jonyer, Klampar and Gergely.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Ikaruspingpong

Unlike most clips from the 70s - which are mainly snippets - these are nice and long. As well as the 3 big guns you can also see players like Orlowski, Desmond Douglas, Secretin, Li Chen Shi and the 17 year old Waldner. Worth checking out for those with an interest in TT history.

Thanks CM. Had to check out my blade's namesake's game against Hilton. Interesting to see how in 1981 they were still using same colour rubbers in high level matches, when we club players (at my club anyway) were already playing with black and red. Hilton got so many points from the deception of spin coming off his different black rubbers, but Gergely still managed to shoot his lights out (just).

I especially enjoyed the matches from the final of the 79 WTTC men's teams when Hungary beat China 5-1 (!) - the big 3 were on fire.

Yeah it did look different - this is apparent even in the way they served. Once Waldner, Grubba, Persson etc came on the scene in the 80s TT started to look somewhat more like it does today. Despite his sloppy attitude and poor physical conditioning, Klampar however was well ahead of his time. He played in the World Champs in 1969 yet made the semi of the Olympics in 1988 and the 1/4 ers of the Worlds in 1989 losing to Waldner (the eventual winner) 22-20 in the 4th.
