Does Chen ever chop on the forehand side? Or is it a modern defenders thing to not chop on the forehand side?

Chen plays closer to the table than .... let's say Joo.

Think about how the ball just past its highest point, it's still high.
Just guide it back or counter loop are easier.

If you can force him out far then loop to his FH forcing him to hit the ball around/below his knees...then he will most likely chop.

When I first started watching Chen, I noticed the same thing and wondered why he did that. When he doesn't counterloop, as Bogeyhunter mentions, he just simply "guides" the ball back. It seemed to me that when he did that it should be easily killed by his opponent. Then I started training that shot myself and found out that it's a lot harder for attackers to deal with then you might think...

The important thing is placement and subtle variation in spin. If you notice, the ball usually carries varying amounts of sidespin and/or slight topspin. When placed nice and deep and medium-high in height, it's hard for the attacker who is used to looping heavy underspin to attack strongly. At the top levels, this shots consistency and reliability make it a good alternative to the FH chop.

To me, this a great game to watch, because Samsonov is a tactical genius when I come to TT. He is one player I continously enjoy watching play.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

The reason I am asking these questions is because I have been toying with chopping on both sides recently in my practice sessions with the robot -- and I'm really enjoying it. I am just trying to figure out what I want to do on the forehand side.

While I'm finding it very easy to chop with the peacekeeper on the backhand side of my blade, I was actually quite surprised to find how easily I could chop with the Venus on the front side of my blade. I didn't expect such a fast rubber would offer me such control while chopping. I'm actually able to vary the spin with my wrist quite well as well!

I also continue to be impressed by how many gears single ply blades have. I knew that when hitting lightly (such as when playing over the table) these blades were soft and fairly slow. But when I stand back and chop with one of these blades I am finding they slow down even more and I am able to have wonderful slow, soft control while chopping back off the table, and yet when I move in I have OFF++ power to make the kill shot.

Of course all of this is somewhat suspect information because I still have not tried playing a defensive game against a real player yet. Nothing is final until that real test!
