I think these two gentlemen have a very bright future with the China team. Xu Xin, a wang hao style penholder, and Zhang Chao, someone who plays like WLQ and all the tall european shakehanders had a baby (mostly Schlager and Samsonov). Straight arm loops like Schlager, controls under pressure on the BH like samsonov, and couterloops as well as WLQ.

Hrm
I wouldn't say he counterloops as well as WLQ.

His BH does look well controlled, but I suspect it's because he's not that strong off that side counter-attacking relatively.

He looks to me like a copy of Schlager, minus the experience and plethora of tricky serves, but moves better (well, he probably is literally half schlager's age). The BH o-t-t and loop technique looks very similar, fh technique is very similar. Even his footwork looks schlager-isq.

Schlager did say a while back that his style was the culmination of the most efficient technique he and his father could find (or something along those lines)...

As for Xu Xin, he's not a Wang Hao style plant-himself-in-the-middle-of-the-table penholder. BH blocks both traditional and rpb block. If anything, he reminds me more like RSM.

Good anyway. Will be interesting to see these guys more. I suspect Ma Long will be next to hold the crown for a long while though.

Thanks for the vid, mate! I've always wondered how far from the table some of these guys play, so seeing some side-on video coverage in this one is a treat!

Nice find, maxwell. Thanks :)

Havent seen Zhang Chao before, but he does look pretty good. And as already stated, almost a carbon copy of Schlager in may ways.

Xu Xin is very exciting to watch and if he sorts out his BH a bit he will be very, very good IMHO. Yes, he does remind look a bit like RSM, but IMHO maybe more so like Lee Jung Woo for his FH and his extreme athleticism.

Here is a thread with two more videos of Xu Xin in action.

Seems to me that Xu Xin plays like a penhold version of Ma Long.

As for Zhang Chao , he is exactly like Schlager . I wonder how many Schlager are in China :D

I agree it is efficient technique, which makes it surprising to see on a high level chinese player. Normally i'd expect them to use the most effective, not the most efficient technique; being willing to spend 50% more effort for a 5% advantage. I don't know if the longevity of a given player's career is a concern for the chinese team.

My 2 cents

Xu Xin: Has great instinct in stepping around the BH. Also great counterlooping ability.

Zhang Chao: I like the way this guy plays. To me he seems a bit more BH orientated then the rest of the chinese players. He does look a tad like schlager in the way he hits the ball. Theres a clip of him playing a Korean shakehander on youtube where he rips alot of BH killer loops.
