Certainty proves you can play a full variety of strokes with low grip 'rubbers'

What ball are they using?

If you watch carefully the topspin drives are done with a slightly open bat and end up above the head (the classic hardbat stroke). Lots of driving and blocking, not much of the classic chop defense. Modernity has made its way into sandpaper!

Talk about loud.. must be the miking.

Nice! And good of a very serve-oriented player (Gavin) to make it that far and good with sandpaper.

Iskander, definitely not 38mm. I suspect they have moved to poly but not sure. At least one local league allows them to play and does not enforce the 2-colour rule, and they use poly there. I have had a hit with the standard bat (now for sale at a national sports chain over here btw) and it is very quick, perhaps the reason for the tilt towards offense. My point is that they can mix it up well though.

I never saw that Gavin guy play before but from the video I'd say 90%of his serves are illegal as he covers the ball with his upper body. Chris doran played a few tournaments here in Holland, in fact I think he won the wutto (dutch hardbat federation) "world" championship. The style seen in the video is what I usually see in the hardbat tournaments here but in general I see people playing closer to the table.

That sandpaper bat looks quite nice, is the handle on the BH side actually darker or is that just a strange photo?

It is very difficult to judge the legality of the serves given the camera angle but I don't think it is anywhere near as bad as you say. We don't have Doran's viewpoint.

Are the modern service rules in force here? There are a lot of new rules that weren't there even 10 years ago. Until these new rules came out the last change to the service rule was when they banned fingerspin by making you serve from an open palm, and that was back in the 1930s! I don't see anyone here flubbing serve returns because they misread the spin - and I think it was a very rare occurrence back in the hardbat era.
