Just got me a Nittaku Pimplemini in 1,5-1,7 mm. Looks more like something between SP and MP to me. Can´t wait to test it next week.

Normally I would use SP in my forehand, but since this rubber is a little different, I will give it a try in my backhand. I have just tried DHS 651 in my backhand with great succes, and I hope the Nittaku might even do better.

I've heard this is one of the best medium pips in terms of control over spin. A guy on mytt.net bought the pimplemini one topsheet and put it on a thick mrs sponge. He said it was the best hitting/blocking pip he's used...

Sounds perfect. I suspect it is a little like DHS 651. It was also fantastic for blocking. From just looking at the pimplemini I would call it a SP or a MP with small pimples. From just hitting against the wall I would also say, that it seems somewhat faster than f. ex Hallmarks half-long pimples.

I'd definately chose it for a s/pip hitting game. To me it's unique characteristic is the ratio of how much spin it can create v how little it is affected by incoming spin when hitting flat.

I totally agree on that one Shoebox9. Never seen anything like it before. I´m almost certain that this or the DHS 651 will be my backhand rubber for this season.

I finally got to try the Nittaku pimplemini 1,7 mm yesterday. I put it on my backhand on a LKT Pro XC Balsa Transformer blade. This is not a review, since Shoebox9 has already done that quite nice, but rather an addition. Even in 1,7 mm chopping was fairly easy and I was able to create a good amount of spin. The sensitivity to incomming spin was only moderate but I really had to struggle with no spin balls. Most of my shots, where I tried to go over the ball or attack a light backspin ball with a controlled hit, just went long. The ball floated a little like LP with good wobble-effect. Compared to DHS 651 there is less control so I would choose the DHS anytime if you want to attack. The pimplemini might work somewhat better on a thinner sponge as a chopping rubber setting up your forehand attack. Was it is really good for is no spin balls. With the same movement you can either make a quite spinny chop or a no spin ball giving many cheap points. Blocking was also good but I found it difficult to punch-block like I can do with f. ex. Globe 889. All in all an interesting rubber, but it will take you some time to master the attack-strokes.

I beleive this rubber requires slightly different strokes to fully take advantage of it's characteristics.

Attacking underspin for example- you are probably used to "rolling" the underspin into topspin as you attack the ball, but PimpleMini only gives a no-spin ball with the regular stoke, not a topspin ball, so your shot goes long.

I was mainly pushing back low underspin balls- it's great for this, a very slight difference in bat angle can create either good backspin or almost none- then I was flat hitting pop-ups.

I didn't spend much time trying to roll back underspin, but with persistance there may be a technique to do it aggressively. It's fair to say that there are usually some shots you lose (or at least need to radically adjust), when you use a tricky rubber.

PS If you keep using it, I'll be keen to hear the techniques you find most effective.
PPS Pimple Mini One (same rubber but in OX) arrived today. Should be fun.

No doubt about that Shoebox9. This rubber is excellent for deception. You can either produce a no-spin nasty wobble ball or a quite spinny ball with almost the same stroke. Hitting more agressively takes far more practice though since you have to change your strokes. The potential for pimplemini is great, but be prepared to put in a lot of training hours to master the technique. I might give it a go on a slower blade later.

Sledge Hammer are you a short pip player?

Might explain the difficulty in adapting - I get the impression this rubber is a medium pip that has characteristics of a long pip (the pips are soft) - just guessing though.

Yep I´m a SP player. I have tried numerous LP also just out of curiosity, but I usually end up playing SP again. I think you are right about pimplemini being more like a MP than SP. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference. I would also characterize DHS 651 as something between SP and MP, but it plays a lot more like a SP. The 651 also has quite soft pips that will bend under impact, but it is still much easier to use inverted strokes.
